I have been feeling as though solid food stick in my throat and am so scared to eat. I can get liquids down no problem, but those darn solids seam to be sticking. I have had just about every test done possible and they are not realy finding anything. I had a regular barium done about a month ago, a regular x-ray of the neck, a ct scan, because of my complaint of a popping in my throat, along with solid food sticking, a scope done and now today a modified barium swallow study. I was told that the food is not sticking in my throat, that it clears that area fine, but they did see the barium pudding and barium cracker get held up a bit in the very top of the esophagus just after the UES and they did say that there may be some sort of problem with the esophagus, but it is not where I thought it is getting Hung up, it is a bit lower. The scope did not show any abnormality and the doctor that did the scope said that it passed with ease, so why is my food feeling like it is sticking and it feels tight. Where do I go from here? Do I ask for more tests? Are there even any more test that they can do? Or do I just try to live with the feeling of food sticking in my throat?!

Seems like you should have a manometry test done.

What's a manometry test? Does it hurt? Lol

It isn't painful, however it isn't pleasant either.

 

How is the Test Done?

 A thin tube is passed through your mouth or nose and into your stomach.  The inside of your nose will be numbed with lidocaine jelly.  It will then pass into your stomach.  You may gag. This is normal.  The tube is pulled slowly back into the esophagus.  It is important to tell your doctor if you have symptoms during the test. 

 When the tube is in the esophagus, you will be asked to swallow.  The swallowing wave will be recorded.

 The tube is removed when the test is done.  You can expect the appointment to take 30 – 45 minutes, the procedure itself will last about 15 minutes.
 

Why is this Test Done?

 There are a number of symptoms that begin in the esophagus.  These include heartburn, problems swallowing food or liquid, and chest pain.  The exam is often done before and after treatments to the espophagus.

Wow sounds awful. I have got to find out why my food is getting stuck though. So far all other test have come back normal, except the lady that did the modified barium swallow test today did say that she did see the barium pudding and barium cracker get hung up in the upper esophagus just below the UES. So there may be a problem there. But I had a regular liquid barium done about a month ago when all this first started and that one did not show any abnormality, but it was done with liquid not food and it is food that is giving me trouble. I hope I don't have that awful disease that they call something like achalasia?! I have been having chest pains too, like maybe the esophagus is contracting or something, and I think that is one of the symptoms of achalasia.

IMO, it seems like you really should consider getting it done, that way you may get some answers about what is wrong and what you should do about it. I also get chest pains from time to time, I really think mine is from reflux.

Thanks, I am going to talk to my doctor about getting that done.
