throat seizing up

I have been having trouble with my throat seizing up, constricting when I sneeze or swallow when my head is turned. When this happens, it's VERY difficult to breath or talk. I went to an ENT Dr yesterday and he scoped me up my nose and told me I had heartburn.. I've never FELT heartburn before and he told me that that happens to 1/3 of the people with it. He told me my throat was full of burns and prescribed protonix, I'm to go back in 6 weeks.

Has anyone here had that symptom with the throat? and what is the difference between heartburn, Gerd and Barrets esophicus???

Hi and welcome to HealingWell, Pat!!

I have GERD and Barrett's esophagus, so I guess I can sort of tell you a bit...heartburn is a symptom of gastric reflux, where a little flap on the top of the stomach (called the LES), or lower esophageal sphincter is supposed to close and doesn't...causing bile and undigested food products to come back up the esophagus. That's what causes the burning feeling. If this is a continuous event, it's usually due to a hiatal hernia or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). It can even be esophageal spasms. This may cause different things in different people. I actually thought one time that I was having angina from it, as the pain radiated from my chest to my neck to my left arm! The medication that you are on should help with this. You may want to ask for a barium swallow test, to show what exactly is causing this problem!!
