I had a Nissen fundoplication 7/1/2013. On 7/10/2013, I was re-admitted to the hospital with severe gas-bloat that required a 3 day admission with a nasogastric tube to suction out over 3000cc of fluid and air from stomach.
Since being discharged for the gas-blaot, I am still having significant issues. I am almost 6 weeks out from the original surgery. I continue to have dysphagia, worse with liquids. I cannot swallow more than one tiny gulp of water at a time and I am dry and constipated. I can barely eat due to no appetite. I can only burp very small amounts maybe 25% of the time. Worst of all, the gas-bloat persists. I can only eat about one cup of food per day. This gives me bloating, pain, and gas. Anything more than one cup, and the bloating, pain, and gas become extremely unbearable and tortorous. I discussed with my surgeon, who thought this was "interesting." He referred me back to my GI for esophageal dilatation.
I am going for an esophageal dilatation this Tuesday. The GI doctor advised me that the dilatation should help with the dysphagia and burping, although the gas-bloat is likely permanent. It may be relieved somewhat with the dilatation; however, the wrap may need to be taken down if little or no improvement is seen with gas-bloat after the dilatation. He said a reversal of the surgery "should" fix the gas-bloat. [??]
I made an appointment with a specialist who reverses Nissens and I will see him Thursday, which happens to be two days after I will have the dilatation. I am hopeful that he will provide me with more information than the surgeon who did my surgery.
Is there anyone out there who has had similar issues with gas-bloat and that had a successful reversal which relieved the gas-bloat?
BTW, I have been on a short-term disability from work because of all this and need to be back by 10/3/2013 or my job is no longer secure. I am at near terror levels of losing my job plus the fear of never feeling healthy again. I know I simply CANNOT live with this gas-bloat pain and one cup of food per day. I am withering away, extremely fatigued, and miserable with pain after eating.
