Newbie with a hiatal hernia

Hi, my name is Anita and I live in the uk. I have been suffering with a hiatal hernia for 16 months now. I suffer mainly bloating and feelings of fullness and gastritis . I do have gerd but it is controlled by ppi , I live mainly on rice and chicken and eating out is a nightmare. My symptoms are not atypical to normal hiatal hernia sufferers which is heartburn. I have had a ph manometry test but the results are normal, but there is some weakness in the lower sphincter . I have had an endoscopy which diagnosed a HH and fundal gastritis . My surgeon is a bit reluctant to give me a nissan but has not totally ruled it out. He wants to see my endoscopy results. He is afraid that as I am borderline , I might be trading in one set of problems for another . Does anybody out there had a nissan with my symptoms and did it work for you. thanks thank you for your comments. My hernia has a tendency to keep sliding up and down and i suffer a lot from regurgitation of foods. When it goes up, I get terrible bloating and wind and reflux and when it starts to settle again(which takes months). I can begin to eat a better range of food but my surgeon is not against giving me one. He just wants to be sure which is good in a way as he is not a scalpel happy surgeon and just wants the best for his patients so I understand his reluctance being on the borderline. He wanted me to check peoples comments on their nissan fundoplication operations and their side effects. I asked him for a partial wrap which he is willing to do. Does anybody suffer from regurgitation when they are bending down or over as I have that quite a lot.

Thanks Barry for your reply, my surgeon is quite senior in the uk as he works in the Nhs and his specialty is bariatrics and hernia repair . He has done hundreds of operations so I am quite confident of his abilities . He has a private practice on the sideline where I am seeing him so I can bypass queues and also because I know it will be done by a consultant rather than a practicing registrar. The problem I mainly have that this hernia needs fixing as every time it goes of position it causes me no end of grief and I am getting thinner and thinner with problems of putting on weight . It's not I don't like food, I love eating but just have problems with food digestion as it caused me bloating and abdominal pain .

I am 20 and my doctor believed I have had my Hiatal Hernia since birth, it was diagnosed when I was 15/16. But my GP(s) were always reluctant to get my tested to see what was wrong, when it was diagnosed the doctor was reluctant to do anything about it. After pressuring my GP to get me another apt with a surgeon I eventually got it, at first even the surgeon was like "why dont you see how you feel after awhile", but come on I lived my whole life with symptom. I had to push and push to get anything done about it and as of today I am one week post Nissen Fundo Surgery

I have had horrible regurgatation after meals almost everyday!! I, like you, live off rice and chicken (because Im fussy and it is F'in Delicious) . (this is kind of disgusting but.. )I also would eat a lot of food that didnt taste nasty throwing up.

Anyway, I basically just want to encourage you to go through with it, because I, personnaly, couldnt imagine living the rest of my life the same way I have done for twenty years

I was never really told how big it was, but i did the 24hr ph monitoring and had over 250 reflux episode in 13 hours!!! so thats pretty bad I guess.

Often Docs will try and turn you away from surgical treatments if they think medicine will fix it. I was on Tabs since I was 15, (zoton, I think it was) and after they discovered my hernia they moved me to Nexium but while nexium helped a little, it became less and less effective until I was at the point of think swallowing a tic tac would work better

But even before nexium stopped working altogether I started pressuring for the surgery because I believe that doctors think if they can fob you off easily then they dont think you really want or need surgery, its sort of like their insurance policy against doing unnecessary surgeries.

Anyway,I am, thankfully, after getting my Nissen and having gone an entire week without throwing up I am absolutely delighted. I really couldn't be happier!!

I am in Newcastle under Lyme , Staffordshire , hope your surgery goes well . Do you have a hiatal hernia as well ?
