I am a 33 (almost 34) yr old female that was diagnosed with GERD in late 2009. I have been on Nexium, Zantac, Dexilant, Prilosec, Aciphex, and Carafate and combinations of those ever since. Even on my current Aciphex and Zantac 2 times a day each I still experience GERD symptoms such as pressure in my chest and a scratchy throat and a very annoying cough. I have had 3 EGDs, 2 Bravos, 2 ultrasounds, Gastric emptying and Barium swallow. Next week I am having a esophageal impedance test before being referred to the surgeon for the Nissen surgery. I also have a small H-Hernia. I have been trying to do research on the surgery but was told the surgeon my not even do the surgery because the H-Hernia is so small.
I'm scared. I'm scared of the surgery but also scared they won't do it and I'll never feel better again. I put myself on a GERD diet, avoiding anything spicy, tomatoes, chocolate, mint, citrus, etc... I'm losing about half a lb a week without exercise. With the idea of the surgery I'm starting exercise today focusing on my stomach to strengthen it for surgery.
I'm sadly finding a lot of horror stories about the surgery despite the fact my primary doc has had it and it went wonderfully for him. He says he's never been happier all because the surgery.
I'm looking for advice on GERD diet tips, information on the surgery, pre-op preparations, post op diet etc... Please help. I just got a job and I'll be starting it soon and I'm scared of the time I'll miss from work and if the surgery will go well. What if the surgeon wont do the operation? What can I do to feel better?
Sorry this is so long, I just really need advice and encouraging words if you have any, truth; good or bad.
