Hi Rob,Oh, wouldn't it be nice to be fully healed and back to your normal activities! And yet you're still in the midst of healing and waiting for that time. You don't enjoy walking, but it's what you can do right now. There are probably other things about your recovery you don't particularly like, but you're doing them! If you could let go of your resistance to walking, you could get out there and start slow. Before you know it, you're power walking, and you'll be ready to roll when your restrictions are removed.
I'm not a lifter, but my son is, and I understand the obsession. While I know what a terrible loss it is to have to hold off on your lifting routine, remember why you had the surgery. It will be worth it all when you're recovered and feeling better than ever.
As Bill said, take it slow and easy once you've started back on your lifting routine. You want to make sure your core strength is back to normal before doing heavy lifting. I know lots of post-Nissen guys lift, but I'd be a little conservative about it, as straining is definitely hard on your hernia repair. Still, you've got to live happily, and if lifting is what does it for you, you can work hard to get back to your old lifting routines. When I asked my surgeon what I could lift after I was healed, and he simply asked me how much I could lift before surgery--so there you go.
Walk, walk, walk. It's good for you! Give it a chance until you can start running again, and try to act as if you like it...you might just find it to be more enjoyable than you ever thought it would be. (I'm a walker...and loving it! Much less impact on those old joints!)
Happy healing,
Denise
