My surgeon said that when he did my wrap, he made sure that it was loose but secure. Consequently, I have been able to burp since the 2nd day after my surgery. Does that fact that I can burp say anything about the success of the surgery? Some in this forum have suggested that if you can burp, then things can come back-up through the wrap e.g. acid and regurgitation. My surgeon says that when the stomach contracts with regurgitation, that LES actually contracts shut, preventing regurgitation to come back up the esophagus. In a normal LES, burping would be a natural body function. Can other heartburn free Nissen patients burp without any secondary issues?

I'm not sure how helpful you will find this, but I've also read it can be a blessing to be able to burp. I've been burping since early on, too.

I have been wondering the same thing because I have tiny burps. I read somewhere that everyone refluxes a little and some reflux with nissen is normal and ok. I think burping would be great because I get so bloated. As long as I'm not refluxing like I was. My surgeon told me I could always do another ph test if I was concerned.

My wrap is at the point it's supposed to be at (supposedly) and I burp some. I'd say not to worry, but it's worth mentioning at your next appointment.

I had the NF on April 1, 2011 and I have been able to burp since early on.. not always.. just sometimes... I have a good response when I need to burp after eating something that requires it.

I had a sudden burp yesterday 4 days post op after eating apple sauce with my meds. If I try to burp I can't though.

Those that can burp, I envy you! I'm 4 months post-op and can't burp yet. My surgeon said it could take as long as a year to get that back so I'm being patient. In the meantime, I keep beano handy ;)

Yes burping is a huge plus!

Remember everyone has some reflux. There is a normal acceptable amount of reflux because of this. If the LES is so tight that you never burp it's going to cause bloating and be harder to get food past. This doesn't mean the wrap will fail. It's a very good thing.

When they 1st started the nissen they would make it pretty tight and people had a lot more problems with gas and bloating along with getting food and liquid down.

Even with my 1st nissen I could burp some, but getting food past was hard because it was done wrong and on an angle. You won't be able to get a true belch all the time when needed like pre nissen, but being able to burp some will be to your advantage in the long run.
