Is it possible that the size of a hiatus hernia decrease?

Not without it being made smaller by a surgeon. Some have claimed to be able to do this, but I haven't seen anything to confirm it.

A friend told me that his hiatus hernia decreased from 2cm to 1cm in his recent test ( I forgot to ask whether it is an endoscopy or other test).

Hello Hopegood. I hope that hernias CAN decrease or disappear on their own, with lifestyle changes and healthy diet but in reality I think they only go away with surgery. This is what the doc told me at least.

No, they cannot decrease. The only way they will go away is with surgery, unfortunately.

I was told by my GI doctor that the measuring of the hiatal hernia during endoscopy is not a science, they estimate it. That could be the reason for the difference.

There is also something called a sliding hiatal hernia. I wonder if this might be the type you have and reason for change in size?

A Hiatal hernia is caused by a tear in the diaphragm - this makes the hiatus (the hole in which the oesophagus passes through the diaphragm) too big. This then allows the oesophagus and stomach to slide up and down. The tear cannot be repaired unless with surgery.

Just wondering, what about the chiropractors that say they can fix hernias? I think some ppl are satisfied with their service. And sth else..If the hernia is a sliding one, it only comes up when you acid reflux? (Eat spicy food etc) And the people that never notice hernias, even if they do have it, how can that be?
