Hernia Repair without Fundoplication surgery

I have been diagnosed with mild dysphagia which they believe is being caused by the LPR. I am meeting my surgeon this week to discuss repairing the 3cm hernia without a fundoplication because of motility problems, but also restoring the angle of His. This is to try to give me some relief, and combine it with medication.

Has anyone else had this procedure? rolleyes

I had both hh repair and wrap. You'll be sore afterwards when you breath deep but maybe it will help your problem.

the only problem with only doing the HH repair is you may need a 2nd surgery to do the wrap later if the HH repair doesn't stop the symptoms. that's why they like to do both.

Also they can do a modified wrap vs a 380 degree wrap. Myself I wouldn't do one without the other, unless like my redoes the HH repair is still good and the wrap only needed repaired.

Hey Bill,

I noticed that you have had a number of re-do's to your Nissen. Do you have a string of posts explaining why you have had so many, why they didn't work and if all of them are done Lapro?

Your posts are always positive and I'm curious of your journey. I'm still in the newbie category with my GERD and have posted a few times....

I have a small sliding HH and pretty bad GERD on and off, but on meds for life I'm told at the ripe old age of 37.

Hi GC1pink, there's some history here that explains some of the reasoning behind opnwhl4's suggestion that in most cases, HH repair only, is possibly not the best option.

My 1st 2 were done Lapro and my last redo was done as an open surgery. My last had to be done open as I had an esophagus tear 6 months prior and what had to be done to stop it from leaking tore my wrap apart, along with scar tissue. It actually was my easiest recovery.

I found out some time ago that having a positive attitude when things happen that are out of your control works best.

Hi Joy, Bill & Phil,

I am aware that if I don't have the toupet it might not solve all my problems, and I may need to go down that route later on, but right now, I have upper dysphagia and lower tertiary contractions with spasms, so I don't have much of a choice at the moment.

We will see what the surgeon says on Thursday, however unfortunately if you have motility disorders your choices are limited.
