17 days after fundoplication

Hi all

It's been 17 days since my op and I'm still finding things difficult.

I got over the surgery pain in my abdomen quite quickly.

I thought that I'd got over the shoulder pain but it seems to have come back. I often wake in the morning with the shoulder pain which gradually goes during the morning . It's the pain internally that I'm finding difficult. I'm sure it's due to healing it's seems to affect my oesophagus and I get that lump feeling in my throat it's not there all the time but mainly when I wake in the morning. My throat and upper oesophagus often feels that it's warm i don't know if thats part of the healing.

I don't have any trouble swallowing.

I'm hoping that all the discomfort is due to internal healing. Could the swelling at wrap and hernia repair site be pulling on the oeosphagus and then annoying the throat ? That's what it feels like internally like it's all being pulled and affecting my chest. I can't work out if the chest / oesophageal warmth is just the healing or it's heartburn.

My surgeon tried to explain that the brain really struggles to distinguish the pain in the oesophagus as to what it really is.

How long does it take for the internal swelling to heal and calm down?

I've been to see my surgeon and he says that all is welll. He's very confident that the surgery as worked. He said some people see results straight away and others it takes time. I'm sure he's correct but of course I worry incase it never gets any better than this. I really was hoping by now that I would be seeing results.

I guess what I'm asking is did anyone else have these problems after surgery and then go on to fully recover? If so how long was it before you saw results?

Hiya Maria, I know your going through a rough time at the minute but honestly its still early days in your recovery.Youll have to trust in your surgeon,hes saying that things are ok and its just the swelling.
I would say it will take 3 months before your surgeon would take any action on your symtoms.
Im not saying that nothing is wrong just that this type of surgery has a long healing time.

Hi,its only natural to worry,i never understood people who say "don't worry".
I know how your feeling, I went through the same thing with my first surgery and it turned out that everything I was being told was wrong and I really did have problems.I only got investigations carried out after 3 months though. Hope things settle soon for you Maria! Barry
