Hello all,

 

I am fairly new here. I was having chest pains/panic attacks....that lead to being diagnosed with gerd. I am on nexium 2x day, and take tagamet with meals. My chest pains have subsided significantly. Now the pain is mainly in my stomach (just feel sick to my stomach, almost like it is in knots). I feel sick if I don't eat, and often sick if I do eat. The discomfort is the main symptom (I am not throwing up or having significant problems going to the bathroom). I seem to feel the best in the afternoon and the worst in the evening.

 

I guess my question is how many others have similar problems? I am going for my prelim exam (endoscopy) on Friday, and just wondered what to expect.

Hi Mark,
Your symptoms sound very familiar to mine. I have a duodenal ulcer caused by h.pylori and does cause a lot of discomfort in my stomach. When mine is acting up, I get a burning sensation (kind of feels like someone is using a car lighter) in between my rib cage and navel slightly to the right. I get those hunger pains and eating a small snack helps me. If I eat too much, I will feel sick to my stomach. I don't vomit too much as I am very careful about eating small meals. If my ulcer is bleeding substantially, I will see "black tar" in my stool which is an indication to me to get to the doctor immediately. He will put me on anti-biotics and double my prevacid dosage for two weeks. For you, to me it sounds like a possible ulcer but I'm glad that you are going to get it checked out so you can rule out other things as well. Let me know if you need any other information about ulcers and the symptoms.

Mainly at night, I seem to get that sick feeling when eating. Often within the first few bites. I try to eat regular meals/snacks (careful not to overdo it) and the feeling usually goes away.

I overdid the aspirin (took it for heart protection), and my doctor thinks that may be the root of some of these problems.

I kind of hope it is an ulcer, just can't get this procedure done fast enough it seems.

I should add that my symptoms came on quite quickly. I would occasionally get a chest pain that ususually only lasted a few minutes, were quite mild... really just enough to make me notice.
While on vacation, I got a couple strong attacks (after eating citrus.. this was completely new to me). Along with this came bloating/gas with meals. Again, this was new to me. Now that I have been on the nexium for a few weeks, this has subsided. Now, my symptoms are as listed above, mainly in my stomach. Within a few weeks this went from very infrequent to most of the time.

Hi Mark!

I have GERD, too. I noticed that when I first started taking the protein pump inhibitors like the Prevacid, Nexium, etc. that I was helped tremendously! - though, I must tell you that it did take a while for the inflammation in the esophagus to settle down and that there were still foods that I just could not eat. Now 3 yrs. later and still taking Aciphex and Ranitidine I'm doing great with basically no symptoms. I can even eat an orange now with no problems! I wish for you the same.

Maxxx - Good luck with your procedure on Friday.  We will be thinking about you.  Let us know how it all goes.

I've had two and can honestly say they weren't bad.  Of course, I was out cold when both were done.  It's the only way for me.

Life is a journey.  Just consider this a detour in the road.  Best wishes.

Hi Mark,
I was dx w/Gerd 5-6 yrs ago, but symp for many yrs. I have exp chest pain in the past but mostly the stomach upset;feeling just sick all over, more like morning sickness of pregnancy, just horrible. I also feel sick if I don't eat. I have tried several meds and now on Prolisec for the second time. I'm feeling better now, but I still watch everything I eat.

Today was the prelim. They tried to schedule the exam for the 11th, but that got cancelled. I won't find out when they can do it until tuesday. I am slightly calmer now, the doc does not think it is anything searious (moreso than an ulcer). My symptoms do not fall into a specific category... I had an ulcer years ago, so he wants to look again.

I was taking nexium and tagamet. He took me off the tagamet, he said it counteracts the nexium. That alone may help!
