Mine was scheduled a few months in advance. If your need is urgent, they will fit you in sooner. I've heard of life threatening situations where they got the person in the next day. However typically, if your situation is not immediately life threatening, they will schedule you a month or so out. There is no real way for me to give you an exact estimate, as I'm sure many hospitals are different.
It is a good idea to prepare for this. I had the nissen fundoplication surgery November the 1st of last year. There are many journals on here that you can use to prepare for your surgery. And by preparation, I mean stocking up on specific kinds of foods, and for someone to help you out at least the first few days after your surgery, and someone to be present the day of your surgery and the time when you get home.
Ask your surgeon what he or she recommends to eat. There are variations in what surgeons recommend eating, and how soon you can transition from a liquid to a soft/sloppy diet, but for the most part you will for sure be on a liquid diet, at least initially.
Here is my journal for you to look at, I hope it's helpful. Feel free to ask any questions you have.
