Gosh this is a long story.  Let me cut to the chase and say that maybe all the asthma dilators cause reflux.  Conversely all the reflux meds keep everything down including mucous.  I know all the doctors would never agree but now I stopped one reflux drug a couple of nights and finally got up some of the mucous.   A coincidence?  Maybe?

I can't take the long acting beta agonists - they aggravate my reflux symptoms a lot :-(

I was referred to a respiratory service due to breathlessness which I never had before experiencing reflux. The nurse I saw said that it is a coincidence and that it has nothing to do with reflux ... some coincidence! I am being referred on to a lung specialist and will try and pick his brains about this.

Anyway last week I was started on a Ventolin (salbutamol) inhaler. I sincerely hope it doesn't make my reflux symptoms worse!

I find the normal old fashioned blue Ventolin is OK, so long as I don't take much of it. I tried again this year with one of the combi inhalers (steroid + LABA i.e long acting Ventolin) and ended up in a very painful state with my stomach/reflux symptoms. I do have this hypersensitivity thing, so I don't know if it's actual reflux I feel, but it was bad enough for me to stop the new inhaler. Now I'm almost back to how I was beforehand, not quite yet there. I did find some information in the medial literature (which I think I printed off.....) that said the LABAs do relax the LES.

Like you, I find the clinic staff are very determined that reflux annoys asthma (which it can) but suggesting asthma inhalers can aggravate reflux falls on deaf ears.

It's been proven that chemicals that irritate/trigger reactions in the esophagus can affect the heart and vice versa. Some of the stuff we inhale gets swallowed, and also it's only a small step from the esophagus to the trachea. I can't imagine inhalers NOT aggravating reflux in people who are sensitive.

Google cardioesophageal reflex (that's reflex with an e, not a u). A whole bunch of scientific studies pop up, some listing the term "linked angina."

All our systems are linked via the vagus nerve.

I'm certain of the irritation it causes me but it leaves me without adequate treatment for my asthma! However, I find being breathless easier to cope with than the symptoms of reflux!

I guess I will be seeing a pulmonologist soon. Frankly, who knows what he will say? Had a bad flare up of asthma and that is much worst than my reflux. Will be happy if he is fairly polite and does not accuse me of having anxiety and the usual bs.

I actually asked a shrink and he said that there were no signs of anxiety. Try telling that to some of the voodoo docs.

OOOHHHH...can't wait to meet another creep.
