Hi, I just attended the Digestive Disease National Coalition (DDNC) in Washington, DC. One of the speakers from NIH told us about research on the relationship of taking PPI's to gluten intolerance/allergy. It makes so much sense since the PPI's can interfere with digestion. Wondering if anyone here has heard about these studies. I'm trying to wean myself off the PPI's now.

It is interesting that you were able to attend this Digestive Disease National Coalition conference.  If you ever find an article referring to this topic do feel comfortable posting a link to the web site for our members to read.

I have not heard of gluten intolerance causing heartburn and your the first one that has mentioned PPIS and gluten.

I would be interested in more info.

I will - I've got an event for ACS on April 26 and after I have that finished I will find the study and post it. The study was on PPI's causing gluten intolerance.

Strangely enough, I have just been to see a Consultant today who was interested in the fact that I was on a wheat free diet and had GERD as she said she had had two patients who by going completely gluten free (but like me not coeliac) had excellent healing of the oesophagus. So she suggested it may help me to ensure that not only was I wheat free but also gluten free. I take PPIs.

I hope Erica will chime in here. I believe she and others have gotten some good results going gluten free.

You said the magic word! Gluten free has been helpful. My doctor thinks being on ppis for a while contributed to ibs symptoms. Gluten is difficult to digest, especially today's wheat leading to many symptoms. I avoid it as I can not tolerate it. It not only flares ibs symptoms but aggravates my gerd. I have also lost weight without wheat. I have also investigated the book " wheat Belly" which provides a lot of research on the problems with wheat. I'm happy I can't have it. There are tons of gluten free substitutes. It is hard to go to events but I'm used To it.

yeah I've read some about this. Maldigested proteins (that would have otherwise been taken care of by stomach acid) entering the lower GI tract and triggering immune responses. All the more reason to get of those PPI's. I too eat gluten free. I think all of the dexilant (60mg/day) gave me a mild intolerance. Less reflux and bloating/gas.

Kitt, yes - American Cancer Society. I help with Relay For Life with a canine event called Bark For Life. To the others who posted - it really does make sense, PPI's push down the acid so digestion harder to process foods. Since going GF I've read alot about things like how distilling processes the grain and sour dough bread where the starter processes the gluten that is usually done in the gut. It's all so very interesting. I have been off my PPI's for a week now. I just started taking an apple cider vinegar pill with my meals today, I already take Digest Gold at dinner and have supplemented alot with Tums. Fingers crossed and lots of prayers!

Dr. Oz on television, did a show on food sensitivities. The show aired on feb 4th, 2014. He mentions that acid reflux can be one of the signs of food intolerances. I just came across this information while home recovering from my MUSE procedure.

Two years ago I started experiencing GERD (heart burn, pain under my left rib cage, and regurgitation). After trying probiotics, kambucha, kefir, apple cider vinegar, aloe juice, eliminating chocolate, citrus, tomatoes, spices, cinnamon, mint, alcohol, not eating 3 hours before bed, I was no better.

I got an endoscopy/colonoscopy. The dr found gastritis and esophogitis. No hernia, infection or ulcer. He started me on PPI. I got 99% relief. After six months I decided on my own to go off and take it just as needed. After suffering for 3 months, I went back to dr and back on PPIs for a year. Because I am young, 39, and the PPIs have side effects he discussed surgery with me.

I went to a specialist. All the tests showed my esophagus was normal but my lower esophageal sphincter was not closing properly. I was a good candidate and decided on the MUSE procedure. (Endoscopic surgery to staple the esophagus to prevent reflux)

When the specialist did his endoscopy (1 year after previous one and before I was on PPIs regularly) and he saw villi damage that looked like textbook Celiac. HUH? I don't have ANY symptoms. No cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, gas, discomfort, NOTHING. He took biopsies and the results were back "non-specific" perhaps "clinically latent celiac sprue" or a number of other things.

So I took blood tests. The celiac gene test was "susceptible" and I had "high" antibodies, but not positive.

Did the PPIs cause the villi damage because I couldn't absorb the wheat properly and triggered celiac in me? It sounds reasonable.

Dr told me go gluten free to prevent full celiac. I wonder if now that I have had the MUSE surgery and may be able to stop PPIs, will I be able to digest gluten better?

Very interesting. I plan to call a celiac specialist where I live to discuss this with him. Will keep you posted.

I just started my second week of being PPIs free. I have been drinking Orange Flavor Fiber with Apple Cider Vinegar mixed in it 3 times a day to stop the acid reflux and it seems to be working. I have gluten free since November 2014. I have taking PPIs since April of 2007. Had upper GI done in 2013 small intestine was bright red.
