I have read that underlying cause of LPR may be an H. Pylori infection. The way I understand it (and by no means am I an expert re this topic) the pylori bug gets into the stomach lining and proceeds to LOWER (yes, lower!)the acidity of your stomach contents. This has two effects:
1) Food is processed more slowly through your system because your acid is lowered, and the acid is what breaks down the food. Food hangs around making you burp and pressing up against your lower sphincter.
2) Your sphincters start to lose tonicity (their stretchy strength). This happens because your sphincters react to proper levels of acid in your stomach by closing tightly, but now you don't have enough stomach acid for them to react strongly enough to make a completely tight closure.
3) You start to experience heartburn or symptoms of silent reflux so you take acid neutralizers or proton pump inhibitors. So, the acid levels in your stomach are further reduced. The H. Pylori loves this and thrives.
Just one theory..................

Kitt
