endoscopy with a sedative - any advantages?

I had 2 endoscopies and both times the anesthesiologist used propofol. And right after the endoscopies the gastroenterologists spoke with me and I asked questions because you wake up easily from propofol and are clear headed enough. I would never do one without it. I cannot imagine how difficult it is with just having your throat numbed. Please think about finding somewhere they use this anesthesia. It really makes it an OK experience. Good luck!

All 4 of my endoscopies were done sedated with Versed. I can't imagine being awake during the procedure, especially if biopsies were taken. I usually received a full report from the GI doc with the results from the procedure. I then would call with questions after reading the report.

Ye biopsies hurt, in my second endoscopy they took about 4 from my esophagus and for one of them I actually let out a muffled scream lol.

I prefer it unsedated though just so I can walk out afterwards, and in the end the endoscopy is nothing compared to bad heartburn and gastritis episodes!

I refuse Versed. It does nothing for pain, just makes you forget afterwards. You should hear patients getting colonoscopies yell. I've had days lost after being given Versed - when I had expressly refused it in writing.

There's no reason for sedation unless you can't stand the procedure or the doctor wants to do something special. I get Propofol only because I'm a horrible gagger. I wake up with my brain intact.
