Hi hope you don't mind me asking a couple of questions. My first nissen was 2001, it was fine for 8 years then back came heartburn& nausea. After lots of doctors and tests, on Wednesday my Consultant said all he could offer me was either stay the same or have a partial fundoplication. So I have scheduled the operation for after October when my husband retires. I am apprehensive, I was so ill during my last recovery, but I have motility problems now, also the wrap is tilted,this was found out during a high resolution camera manometry. I have been reading your story and you have given me hope. The doctor could not promise me an end to the burning though so this is whats worrying me. Did you have fears or not? Thanks Rita

Hiya Rita,glad your finally sorted out with a surgeon who will redo your surgery as i know you had trouble.
I can tell you i was scared stiff before going to another surgeon for a redo.You wonder are you going to make things worse but thats only natural to worry. I was so ill with my first nissen i really had nothing to lose,i had to find out what was wrong aswell.
The surgeon told me the same as yourself,that he could not promise i would not have reflux after a partial wrap.I think he said one in ten would still get heartburn but it was still an improvement from before.
I am so glad i had my wrap redone,it has really changed my life,im off all medication and have no reflux or heartburn since.My only problem now is bloating after drinks,my stomach goes up like a balloon but i dont mind really.
Can i ask Rita what type of fundoplication are you having ie 270 degree or 180 degree? Are you having your surgery with the same surgeon? Barry

Morning Barry, thank you so much for your reply it has done a lot to ease my mind. Its hard enough in this small country to find anyone who has had this op once never mind twice! I never asked the degree of the wrap what was yours? You know how it is lots of questions you wished you had asked pop into your mind too late. I went to my initial surgeon first of all, he did an endoscopy, found no reflux and dismissed us as if to say his operations never fail! Of course since then in my trail around numerous NHS doctors& hospitals plus this site I know thats not true. Did you find it was a longer op with the scar tissue etc? Also how long a stay did you have? At least this time I will be prepared for the long and somewhat difficult recovery. Thanks Rita

Hi Rita, I know what you mean about finding a surgeon in the UK,its not easy! Theres only one surgeon here in Northern Ireland doing Nissens.Cant understand That.
My wrap was a 200 degree,he said he would do a 180 but for whatever reason he said it was slightly bigger.
There was some scar tissue from the first wrap which seems to be the surgeons main worry but he managed to work round it.He showed me some great pictures of the surgery afterwards,not for the faint hearted though!
The redo took two hours only which was great i thought as my original op was two and half hours.
I woke up from the redo feeling great compared to the way i was,i just knew whatever was wrong before was fixed. My recovery was great,i was up and around straight away and flew home two days later. Then it was the just usual recovery of shoulder pain and eating slushy foods for a couple of months.
Im sure youll be ok Rita,a partial wrap is easier to get over! Barry
