Hi bluesax7,I've been a member of this forum for over five years, and over that time I've learned a lot about
GERD and esophageal issues. I've followed the stories of countless people as they stop by to discuss issues and ask for support and information. I've read about
their conversations with their GI doctors, and their results of their testing. During that time, I've learned one thing for sure. GI doctors consistently try to reassure their patients that they don't need to worry about
getting esophageal cancer.
Here's a link to a webpage that discusses cancer risk. As you will see, GERD is mentioned as a risk factor, but you will note that it makes it clear that this is not a major risk factor, and that there are others that are much more likely to lead to esophageal cancer.
www.cancer.org/cancer/esophaguscancer/detailedguide/esophagus-cancer-risk-factors It says:
GERD is very common, and the vast majority of people who have it do not go on to develop esophageal cancer. Anxiety can also create swallowing issues, and stress and increase reflux. As a retired teacher, I understand the stress you're under. Thankfully you'll have some time this summer to give your body time to refresh and rest, so you're ready to start the new year!
You are under the care of a doctor. You're treating your GERD/LPR. Because of that, you are reducing your risk even further. If you were ignoring your problems, you could certainly be setting yourself up for problems, but you're not! You are doing everything right. If your doctor thought that you were at risk for developing cancer, he/she would be on it.
Try to relax!
Hang in there,
Denise
