Damage to Nissen

Hi Everybody!

I'm back! Once again I am so grateful for this forum and to talk to all of you! The past couple of months have been interesting so thought I would bring you up to date with my situation.

My Nissen was about 3 years ago - a giant para esophageal hernia with my stomach located high in my chest. After a 5 hour surgery it was successfully moved down but another hernia developed right away while I was still in the recovery room. This was due to coughing and retching! This hernia was repaired a few months later but they did not get all of the hernia or else there was another that was missed. So another surgery!

During the past year I have had more symptoms than ever including food getting stuck, a LOT of reflux and even nausea. Finally I told my family doctor that another scope was needed even though I was not due for one. I got to see the surgeon who does the scopes within a 2 week period. While still in his office I was given lab requisitions for blood work and an ECG AND told to be at the hospital at 7:30 in the morning for another scope. Just amazed that they got me in so quickly.

The scope was this morning and showed that I have a rip in the wrap and the stomach has come back up! I was given prescriptions for increased Nexiom and Notilium. They called directly from the hospital to set up appointments for a bariom swallow and another ECG.

It looks like more surgery is coming my way.

Before my initial surgery I had not been aware of giant para esophageal hernias. After the surgery I thought everything was fixed! I had no idea that things could unravel.

I will post again after all of my results are in and they decide what they are going to do with me. I hope all of you have better luck the first time through this procedure!

Hi Alcie,

Thanks for posting back. When I initially asked my GP for another scope he said I wasn't due for one for another year. The dr who does the scope said the same thing - until finally I went back to the GP and recited the symptoms. Then things moved very fast!

One of the first things I was asked was "Are you vomiting blood"
I am glad I could say no but you have had that symptom - Yikes!

The next thing asked was if I had burning in my throat - heart burn. And I do and it is getting steadily worse.

I don't know what variety of wrap they did but for the last hernia repair, the dr used a big piece of mesh. He is getting tired of patching me up!

I wish that he would do the next surgery but he has already said no to that idea. I don't want the surgeon who did the initial wrap so I am going to have to look for someone out of town.

I hope you can get a scope scheduled soon.

I will post again when I have more test results and know if they will do surgery.
