i'm not new to healingwell boards but up untill today never came in to the GERD boards. the topic of "Nexium Side Effects - It's Messing With My Head" caught my eye. I've been on Nexium for severial years now and have noticed things that i was just writing off to having been on so many meds for so many years. I can't seem to focus on things for very long, i can't seem to remember much of anything.( infact i have to have my wife go to ALL my doctors appointments because i, for the life of me, can't remember what was said or many of the reasons i went to see the doctor in the first place.) always tired and fall asleep at the drop of a hat. I have forgotten to take my Nexium on severial occasions and within hours of when i was supposed to take it I was had terrable burning. most of the time i have trouble maintaining a thought, seems like someone changing chanels(surfing). i was on prilosec for years before the nexium and it began to not to work as well as i needed it to anymore. i haven't read threw any of the other topics and will. i just thought i'd say hi and i look forward to getting to know ya'll.

I've never taken the Nexium before myself, but I just did a fairly extensive search and I'm not finding anything that matches your symptoms.  Don't get me wrong - I'm on your side and was looking for things that could go wrong. :)  Usually when you put a drug, or a health issue that has been causing major problems into a google search, or yahoo search engine, it comes up automatically with lawyers names! lol  I found on the "Nexium" site that most frequently reported adverse reactions were headache, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.  However under the physician site I did get a better view and it lists the adverse effects that occur in, I think 1% of the population...it's way too long to list here, so I tried to copy and paste the address and it wouldn't work, so here's the address hand copied and I hope it works.  Remember, one thing that I've been told and read.  These drugs were initially made and prescribed for people taking them about 6 wks.  So with us 'long-timers' (another made up word -I know Jen loves those! tongue ) I suspect we could come up with a few extra symptoms.  I wish you the best of luck, John!!

A quick comment ...

although the technical indication for PPI therapy is only 8 weeks for acute therapy ... the major PPI's have maintenence indications as well (>6 months). However, you need to decrease the dosage and still remain effective to "technically" achieve a maintenence dose.

I've had patients on Prilosec for more than 8-10 years and have not noticed that they complain about side effects ... I think ... because the 1/2 life of the drugs are so short.

well, shoot..........., i was hoping that i may have found something to blame my lousy memory on. there's no chance it due to old age since i'm only in my mid 30's lol. :(

i guess it's just as well. Nexium seems to do a good job for controlling my reflux. I'd hate to think it was causeing adverse side effects.

it's hard sometime for me to tell if some of the issues that i'm dealing with are caused by my conditions or by the meds that i take to controle the Crohn's / twisted colon / acid reflux / sleep apnea / depression / anxioty / back pain.

Hi John,
I'm wondering......what other meds are you on? Maybe it's one of those.
Personally, I have been turned into an idiot with the beta blocker Toprol. It has really made me confused and I've totally lost my short-term memory. Maybe it's another med you are on? But also remember........you could be having a reaction to the Nexium that others don't tend to have. We're all really different as to our reactions to things. I was on aciphex, and didn't seem to have too bad a problem with my brain.......but I have ADD, and am 55, so my brain is deteriorating just from those 2 things! Good luck.
P.S. I've heard that sometimes, if you don't have enough stomach acid, you might not absorb your vitamins.......so maybe it's a vitamin deficiency problem??

i don't absorb all the vitamins i need anyways due to having a section about 1 1/2 feet long removed from my colon about ten years ago. it's sad, sometimes i have to ask my wife how old i am :( good thing i have her or i'd be in a total mess. lol
