My daughter was told I had possbile Barretts and gastritis. I see doc on the 11th. I went from 105 lbs in May to now floating between 86 and 90 lbs!!! I don't know how to gain my weight back. I've been taking Zantac, carafate, and maalox off and on since June....didn't like side effects of prilosec and nexium....pepcid made me dizzy. Zantac helps some but afraid to take two a day so I'm just taking one and maalox at bedtime as needed. Having more stomach pains etc today than normal....I only do carafate when I feel I need to cuz of constipation and headache. I'm miserable trying to keep eating the same everyday.
I eat canned or boiled/baked chicken....oatmeal every morning and evening with half a banana, sometimes with raisins, rice cereal with 1 or 2 % milk, cooked carrots, green beans, baked or mashed potatoes.....3-4 graham crackers a day dipped in milk as snack. A piece of white bread toast every now and then....sometimes cantelope or whole grain roll at work.
I'll stop you right there, the good news is your diet is FULL of bad foods that will be making your gastritis worse! So with some changes you should feel a lot better. I'm unfortunately a bit of a gastritis expert through experience, and insoluble fibre is one of the biggest irritants, even more than fat in my experience. Fibre clumps together and will keep your stomach churning, trying to digest them because it senses big particles of food. It doesn't realise it
cant digest them.
So Oatmeal - raisins - bananas - cereal - crackers - toast - raw fruit/veg - get rid of it all. Stick to low fibre foods like potatoes, rice,(very) well cooked vegetables, chicken, fish, milk is ok if you can tolerate it.
Add in some sugar if you're low on calories, I use pure glucose as opposed to table sugar as its easier to digest (doesnt actually need any digestion) and doesn't taste as sweet. Plus some people cant absorb fructose which can lead to other digestive discomfort. If desperate just dissolve as much sugar as u can in 200ml of warm water and down it, i too have lost far too much weight from gastritis so know how desperately you can need the calories!
Also avoid any 'rough' foods like toast and crackers, stick to soft foods, soup is ideal, slow cook some potatoes, chicken and a bit of veg (not onions or anything of that family) in a broth and have that, you should hopefully have no stomach issues with it.
Also drink regular sips of water after meals, I find this may be a little irritating at first if you drink a bit too much, but after a few days you should feel much better - it keeps the stomach more diluted hence less acidic.
Gastritis is REALLY tough to beat, I can't imagine how I could do it without PPIs so I feel for you. If possible try a different type, the two you have tried both have the same active compound, there are three different ones that may not have the same side effects - lansoprazole, pantoprazole and rabeprazole.
Also get on amazon and buy PepzinGI and DGLicorice. Suck a DGL 20-30 mins before each meal, and take the PepzinGI immediately after breakfast and evening meal. These are non-drug supplements that I've tried and seem to help. Not a miracle cure but every little helps.
