So I was diagnosed with GERD plus HH when I was 17. That was over 25 years ago. I've been on medication ever since. I've often contemplated surgery but don't know if I should do it. Currently my GERD is controlled completely with one dose of Nexium 40mg per day. I don't like the idea of life long drug therapy, but also don't like the idea of surgery. Because of other medical issues that require me to get MRIs every so often, I've ruled out the new LINX device and it looks like the Nissen is the other best thing. So should I go for it, or should I only consider it if my GERD gets worse for some reason? Thanks in advance for any insights and hello to everyone here!

If your GERD is currently controlled, I wouldn't worry about having the surgery. You need to have a series of tests done to see if you are even eligible for Nissen. I had multiple Endoscopies, Barium Swallows, Bravo pH testing, and a Manometry. How long has it been since you've had an endoscopy?

I went over 25 years with only Nexium (as early as it was invented). I only needed surgery after an accident that pushed my stomach into my chest.

If you are comfortable, don't get surgery.

It's been a few years. I've already been told by my GI that I'm a candidate for surgery, but I'm guessing maybe I should just stay on my meds. I'm on the fence because, at the moment, my deductible is met and I've reached my out of pocket maximum for insurance this year so the surgery would be free of charge for me. But I guess that's not a good enough reason to just go and get surgery. Any how, thanks so far for the replies...

Welcome to Healing Well.

I am with the others. If your reflux is controlled I would stick with what is working. Surgery for me was a last resort to get mine under control.
