Stretta and Lioresal medication Heeelp!!!!

Hello

Thank you for entering in my post

I was at S. Donato hospital last week to do my 24 hours ph test, which was negative and Doctor Bonavina decided to give me a 20 days therapy with a medicine/tablets called Lioresal (Baclofene).
These tablets need to know if my Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) will respond to this therapy, that is if it will start again to do his work of opening and closing.

If it will, Doctor Bonavina said I can have the Stretta surgery, I have never heard before about medication which help to investigate to know if a type of GERD surgery can be done.

I have been taking these tablets for 2 days now and I am a bit skeptical about it

I live in England and I did travel for 26 hours to have my 24 hours ph test, and I can read many people are disappointed with the Stretta procedure, however It was my decision to go to S.Donato hospital in Milan

I was wandering if here we have some people happy with the Stretta procedure, and if there is some-one who knows this procedure of investigation with the Lioresal

Any further information about it will be very appreciative

By "negative" do you mean there was no acid reflux? That would be a contraindication for surgery.

Baclofen is a muscle relaxer. I took it for muscle spasms, but all it did was put me to sleep at a very low dose. Are they saying your LES won't open? Or won't close?

If your esophagus doesn't work, how will Stretta help it? It should only keep it closed tighter. It should, I'd guess, make it harder to swallow past the sphincter.

But then, I'm a patient, not a doctor. Probably just misunderstanding your message.

Hi hoezap,

I took Baclofen for just over a year. Since my LPR/GERD symptoms became progressive and I had to increase my PPI therapy, I discontinued taking the Baclofen. Obviously the Baclofen wasn't helping in my case. Baclofen was never offered to determine if I was eligible for the Stretta, it was just a part of my GI doctor's protocol to help get my severe LPR/GERD under control.

They said there is acid reflux but it is not serious enough to have a Linx

Doctor Bonavina only said that this medicine needs to see if my LES will repond to it and he said in this way simulating with his hand the opening and closing of the LES

I don't know how Stretta can help, however it did mention also fundoplication since I do have a hiatus hernia which in one gastroscopy seems to be of 2cm and in an-other seem to be 3cm. Doctor Bonavina said that only when we get into my stomach with Laparoscopic surgery we can actually see how big my hiatus hernia is and obviously if it big enough fundoplication whould be a good choice for me

I could tell him that the medicine didn't work and ask him to have a fundoplication surgery and fix my hiatus hernia as well, since I do also have a smal hernia under the skin like a little ball visible by naked eye which could be fixed along with a Laparoscopic surgery

Do you know how Baclofen Lioresal help with LPR/GERD symptoms?

According to what you say it sounds like that Lioresal is stronger than a normal PPI, Doctor Bonavina said that it is different than a normal PPI

Baclofen is supposed to reduce the the occurrence of LES relaxation. My doctor said that he put many people on 40mg to help with their weak LES. I am very sensitive and I was put on 20mg.

Like I said above, it did not keep my disease from progressing so I discontinued it. They do have studies proving that Baclofen works for many people. I've never understood Baclofen to work like a PPI, it is not an acid blocker. It works only to help reduce the amount of times the LES relaxes.

My Lioresal Baclofen tablets are not working, in addition I have just found out that the Stretta surgery can only keep your symptoms down but there is no healing, so it is not for me I won't go to italy again travelling for 26 hours only to keep my symptoms down.

I'm going to send a desperate email to Doctor Bonavina and ask to have a Nissen or even better a Linx
