Finding the right doctor for LPR

Hi everyone,

I've seen a gastro who did an endoscopy (negative).
I know that my symptoms are more aligned with LPR (tons of stuff up in my throat, nose, some in lungs, spitting, etc.); I also had a ton of bloating and belching, but that seems a little better now. I think I should see an ENT to really diagnose this, and to give me some advice on the tiredness I"m feeling (sinus?), etc., and whether my ears are affected.
I'd also like someone who will not prescribe PPIs (only), as it seems they don't work so well for this type of reflux.

Is ENT right next step? Anyone have advice on finding a 'good' one?

I'm in Colorado, if anyone has a recommendation there! Thanks so much. What a tricky disease.

Sk55, I do have her book and am trying to follow the diet. Did you see her, and what did she tell you? I've read some posts from people who've seen her, saying she basically diagnosed LPR and then prescribed meds. Did you have a better experience?

I just saw an ENT who was so unknowledgeable, it was frightening. Threw PPIs at me, couldn't even say what they do exactly. Argh.

shes my doc.

diagnoses and meds are just one part.

first you need to know if u really are refluxing?
where your refluxing?
how strong your LES is?
is this a nerve problem?

thats why u need diagnoses..

the big part is she helps you find the right diet for yourself. she takes pics of your throat and can tell you if your going in the right direction. unfortunately this part takes time. With that information you end up figuring out what diet works for you. thats the biggest part of getting better.

no doctor gonna cure lpr for you, you need to figure out what diet works for you. LPR is different for everyone.

if its a nerve issue, then you need special drugs... like elavil or gapapentin.
only issue is she expensive.

Thanks. Good to know she does more than just diagnose and prescribe meds...I guess some others weren't so happy with their appointments with her.

I know that it has to be more than just nerve stuff, because my stomach is definitely funky and I taste acid (or pepsin?) in my mouth, nose, etc. And, the ENT basically diagnosed LPR.

How much has she helped you?

And, I just had the throat-scope--was SO anxious, really don't want more stuff down my throat! But I guess that's the only way to look at stuff. :( The manometry looks at LES, right? But it looks so miserable. I'm afraid my panic would make it impossible!

its not so much how much she helped me....

by taking a picturing of my throat every few months, i am able to gauge if diet changes are helping....

so basically you figure it out... your doing 80% of the work... she just telling you if your diet is making your throat worse or getting better....

thats why people give her bad reviews, they think a doc gonna give you a magic pill to cure LPR...

I am lot better... i can run... sleep flat... but still eat a strict diet... my throat feels normal most of the day.

if you want to fix your LPR, you need to work hard... try different diets, be strict and dont cheat on the diets... keep a log.

if your stomach is funky....

google SCD diet... that helps...

forgot to mention, if you have panic issues you should see a psychatrisit and get meds for that.... treating that will help LPR....
