Help histology report, not sure what it means??

Can anyone help explain my biopsy results please I'm very frightened.... I'm female, 36 and have two small children.

I had an endoscopy for reflux symptoms, a lesion at the goj was found and biopsies were taken.

Specimen: distal oesophagus

Macroscopy: multiple fragments together 5mm (1ng) (DC/TS)

Microscopy: fragments of has troupes phenol mucosa with acute on chronic inflammation. A small focus of intestinal metaplasia is noted but there is no evidence of dysplasia or malignancy. (Are there any endoscopic features suggestive of barretts metaplasia?)

Welcome to the forum!

It appears that multiple specimens were taken from the esophagus at or near the junction to your stomach. There was evidence of inflammation in the tissue and a small bit of what could be the beginnings of Barretts Esophagus. Dysplasia or Malignancy would be something more serious than Barretts. Given the lack of a better description of the metaplastic cells, I would assume that they aren't anything other than what is starting to be Barretts (the "lesion"). If there was something to be seriously concerned about there would be further testing indicated on the cells to identify any precancerous tissue. Likewise, if the endoscopist was further concerned, there would have been more than 5mm of tissue taken.

Is there any follow-up scheduled with your doctor?

I agree with Tony - it sounds like there was not much to find. It's very common to have mild changes in the "splashback" area, even in people who have NO symptoms. I would expect only routine review, depending on your symptoms and what else they were testing for and what degree of symptom control you've achieved. Did they test you for Helicobacter?

My gp seemed to think this was the end of it but fortunately the consultant who oversaw the scope wants to do a repeat in 3 months, in the meantime I'm going to work hard on my diet and see what I can do. It seems to be silent reflux, the only thing I have had is pain under my sturnam. Since the scope I 've had more classic reflux symptoms...
