10 months post op and the problems are starting

I had my Nissen about 10 months ago. I healed pretty well, lost 17 pounds, and felt pretty good. I lived my live better than before, even quit smoking. But gained the weight back....
Now, for a few weeks now, the heartburn is back. It happens daily. Not as bad as before the surgery, but bad enough. I saw my surgeon today, he scheduled a EGD with Bravo, at first for tomorrow, but they are short on the monitor devices, so it is now set for Monday next week. I also have pain in my stomach area if I do not sit up straight.
Could my Nissen have failed? Is that why the heartburn is back? I was so happy within 2 months of the surgery, after I got through the "baby food" stage. All was well. Now I am worried that it might not have been the right thing to do.

So I had the scope and Bravo. I can feel it in my chest, kind of like an intruder. My surgeon said after the scope that it does not look like the Nissen failed, all looks well. He did take a biopsy of some spot that looked kind of weird. We shall see what it is. For now, I will just have to try to control the heartburn with food....

I would ask if the Bravo is absolutely necessary. Is your wrap at all tight? The darn thing is fairly large. I'd be scared it wouldn't go down. And they pin it to your esophagus. Mine hurt for a long time after it ripped off. that's what they do, you know. Rip through the lining of the esophagus they were pinned to.

Personally, I'd ask for a barium swallow instead. It's non-invasive and shows reflux pretty well.

Just a personal phobia after having gone through it.

I know Bravo is the new in thing - but I think in the case of having had a nissen - then the 'old' nasal catheter would be much better and less painful. Don't think the barium swallow gives a 24 hour picture - but I can't really comment as I haven't had one! I have to agree with you Alcie - I think the wrap is probably too tight.

So the Bravo is done, I had no real problems. I think the thing passed as well, since I cant feel the tiny bit of intrusion in my chest and when I swallow. Now today I get to go to the surgeon and get the results. As well as the results of the biopsy he took when he did the scope. It is weird, but everything is so much better after the scope. I can burp a bit now, which makes the feeling of being bloated better. I have less gas, my family is happy about that. Maybe the scope loosened things a little bit? And the heartburn is so much better as well. Had not had an incident since about 2 days after the scope.

Hi Guys,


I am 2.5 months and can eat pretty most thing within limits i.e.e spices, tomatoes red meat or gluey food.

The real difficulty i have is from week 3 i started having esophageal spams which are really painful and i have problems with breathing when they attack. Surgeon said that it could 5-6 months for everything to settle down.

Anyone have any similar difficulties?

Sometimes i am driven demented by them and other times i can pass them off but they are always there in the back of my mind. If anyone could share any help i would be really gratefull.
