Deciding whether to have toupet fundoplication

I've just had this 10 days ago. Funnily enough I was just asking about tiredness, but on the whole I've been OK. I could belch straight away, been on a sloppy diet ever since a day after the operation, and have not taken any stomach medications since I had my operation. Toupet fundo is supposed to be better for people with reduced oesophageal function, and as such I haven't had any issues there so far. I'm very early into my recovery, but so far I'm happy.

Swallowing isn't an issue, I was surprised to be honest! I missed the 'liquid' stage - was told to eat things like mashed potato and gravy straight away. I didn't feel sick, and I belched from day 1!, I'm pretty sure I could be sick if I wanted to, the wrap isn't as tight as a nissen. My surgeon said there's a good chance I could do both, they also tell you the worse case scenario!

I am in Cumbria UK, we only have 1 surgeon who can do this operation in this area and he is very very good. I was supposed to be in for day surgery, went down for my operation at 3pm - in recovery at 5.30pm, but I was in a lot of pain from my shoulders, and I had a complication which they needed to keep me in for obs overnight, but I was out by lunch time the following day with some paracetamols and codeine for the pain. If they do have you down as day surgery - don't worry - as they will keep you in if there are any problems - and I have to say they treated me very well. If you have any medications that you think you might have problems with, and they don't give you a soluble version, ask if you can have a pill crusher. I was given one by a nurse in the hospital - and it's been really handy!

I had a Toupet 5 years ago. My swallow was called "wimpy." My swallow is still the same, so I have to be careful swallowing dry things. I butter dry tablets.

I got a pill crusher at my local pharmacy. Just a little, cheap plastic thing that works fine. I can swallow pills now if they're small.

I can burp now, although I couldn't for about a year.

I still can't vomit, so I carry Zofran and Donnatal with me for nausea. I've used them with good results. Just don't wait until vomiting is imminent. I'm glad my wrap is that tight, not too much, not too little. I wouldn't want to go back to reflux!

Let the surgeon choose what procedure is right for you. He'll know from the testing what you need. Insisting on the latest fad or what you read in a forum is a pretty bad way to make a medical decision.
