Hi guys,
First time poster here. Hoping to learn a little and contribute too.
Background:
I've been suffering from mild stomach issues most my life, typically due to stress and stressful situations. Whenever I was stressed, I'd carry that in my stomach.
Well about a year ago I was dealing with some significant life events and so much stress that I really started to have severe stomach discomfort, reflux and a host of other digestive issues. Started seeing a GI Doc and found out I had GERD, reflux and the start of Barretts E.
The Doc put me on Nexium 40mg, 1 per day (originally 2/day, but I couldn't do that without stomach cramps). For the past 10 months I have been feeling great! Daily probiotics helped immensely too. In addition to lowering my stress and finding ways to reduce stress and manage it better, I have been taking my Nexium and feeling quite well!
Recently:
about 10 days ago I got really dizzy. Got up to use the restroom one night and was almost tipsy. The next day was better but I still felt a little "off" and slightly lightheaded. The mild/light dizzyness continued for 4-5 days before I realized that maybe the Nexium was causing it. I was also becoming quite exhausted, especially on days after working out. I have a moderately healthy diet and don't drink more than 1-2 drinks w/ dinner.
After reading online about Nexium and side effects I decided to quit the Nexium. I called my Doc but he was unavailable. The Med Tech GI nurse said I should stay on the Nexium due to the Barretts E. I agreed and continued my Nexuim but continued to feel dizzy.
3 days ago I'd had enough of the dizzy lightheadedness and tiredness. So I stopped the Nexium. And guess what!!?? I felt better almost immediately the next morning. In fact the next day and subsequent days I have felt better and better, and "more alive" than ever before. I feel like I'm back to my normal self and not tired or dizzy at all. Great news! Pretty sure the Nexium is the culprit.
Follow Up Plan:
So I've been doing a lot of reading (and found this nice forum too) recently. I've since discovered a ton of ways to fight the GERD and reduce my stomach issues, as well as reducing stress which seems to be my 'trigger.' I'd like to not take Nexium (or other PPI) for the rest of my life, but am willing to if it holds the Barretts off, or keeps it from entering a worse stage. But the side effects are no fun and actually interfere with my work.
PPI - I did take a Nexium yesterday after being off of them for 2 full days. I read that maybe I should 'wean' myself off of the drug to avoid a tidal wave of stomach acid in my stomach when it wears off. I plan on discussing this with my Dr in an appointment I have with him soon. I hope he will reduce my dose, and eventually be free of it forever.
ACV - I've read about all you can read on the internet on ACV, and I really believe it can help. With the upheaval of my digestive system over the years, especially the past year...I think that ACV will do me wonders. I tried it on my 2 Nexium "off" days and it DID seem to help. When I felt a 'bubble' or pressure in my lower sternum come up, the ACV did the trick and seemed to just stabilize my system. I'll keep attempting it and report my findings here.
Michael's/Licorice - My uncle turned me on to Michael's Anticid's, found at Whole Foods or online. The are a Fennel and licorice based anti-acid chewable horse pill thing. Kinda nasty tasting, but effective for simple, transportable stomach discomfort strikes. The jury is still out on these for me. I'll report more findings on them soon.
Looking for discussion and thoughts from the friends and experts here. Thanks for reading my saga!
