I just saw the other old post and it reminded me that I should post my good news here as well.
I received the news of my second EGD yesterday and things are looking up! The bottom line is that I still have a hiatal hernia, and some reflux damage, but no signs of the Barretts! He took multiple biopsys and everything came back a-ok! My esophagitis and Barretts was rather small last year when first diagnosed, but apparently it has healed!
For me the doc had me on a 40mg Nexium daily, for the entire year. I've had a few other health issues as of late and thought some of them were due to the Nexium. Turns out I was WRONG. I have a Vit D deficiency and low testosterone...and have begun treatment for those things. My GI doc however agreed to lower my dose of Nexium to 20mg and I've been having zero issues and feeling pretty great GI-wise on just that. I've spoken to multiple docs and an endocrinologist and they all agree that Nexium shouldn't cause low D / low T.
I've also adjusted my diet by reducing simple carbs, sugars and avoiding spicy foods and that has really seemed to help me. I've cut alcohol immensely too.
Anyway, I just wanted to pass on, that for me, a year of PPIs really helped me. It gave my body time to heal the damage that was mainly stress related and now I can begin to wane off the PPIs knowing more about diet and stress and with better tactics to avoid future flare-ups and reflux causing triggers.
Thanks!
