Has anyone tried charcoal before for GERD or gastritis? I just saw some in the shop and it says its a natural remedy for indigestion and heartburn.
Also my Dr prescribed me peppermint oil capsules for nausea, but there is a big warning saying dont take if you have heartburn or....nausea. Anyone tried them? I thought they were an IBS thing..

Definitely do NOT take the peppermint oil capsules. That will only make the GERD worse and could cause some significant pain.
Some people find the charcoal beneficial, I've never used it so I cannot share my experience with it.

The only way I could see that charcoal may help heartburn is that it would physically remove the acid. Its not a neutralising agent, its a filtering agent.
Be very careful when using activated charcoal, the reason it is used when treating poisoning is because it "sweeps", for lack of a better descript
ion, up anything which sticks to it. You should definately not use it if you are at all constipated, and prolonged use can put you at risk of malnutrition despite what the latest craze for charcoal detoxes will tell you.

Just a little bit of info, I suggest looking at the section on when not to use activated charcoal.

Well I tried the peppermint oil, didnt really go well, felt quite nauseated from it and woke up with much more heartburn than usual. Think I will steer clear of both.

There are three things people usually suggest that can work well for nausea and those are garlic, ginger and mint. Obviously two of those are on the GERD no fly list, but if you like the taste maybe you could try ginger? The most gentle form to have it in would be tea, just make sure it has ginger root in it. There are also companies which make travel sickness medication which is just ginger tablets, so you could try that too maybe.
I get terrible nausea which is too much for the Motillium to handle when I get migraines and one thing I find that helps nausea is to put a wet cloth or ice pack across the back of my neck.

I take a ginger chew, it seems to help me whenever I feel nauseated.

Ginger root tea has helped me with nausea. Also Wholefoods market sells this candy made out of ginger that's really tasty but also has helped me with nausea and stomach pains.

Hi Andy,
Activated charcoal capsules basically eliminate gas and is a remedy for bloating. Peppermint oil capsules or peppermint tea makes acid reflux worse and may sometimes end up in stomach ache and vomiting.
I can recommend you a book to get relief from GERD. You can find the book on amazon and read the customer reviews. Many people have found relief through the diet.
Dropping Acid: The Reflux Diet Cookbook & Cure by Jamie Koufman
I wish you good health.

Thanks. I did try ginger earlier in the week, it gave me for relief for about
an hour and then came back twice as bad! So I'm too scared to try it again. At the moment my insides just feel so sensitive I can't even have too much water as it seems to irritate all my innards. If I have even the smallest bit of salt on food I feel it tingling. So pretty grim ATM but hoping its going to settle soon

Hello,
Andy1986
!
First i decided that charcoal is strange and peppermint oil is even more strange for GERD. But then i made some research about
these remedies.
It makes sence in the case of biliary reflux (wich i have):
- Charcoal can absorb bile from stomach - people use also psyllium husk and bentonite clay for that purpose.
- Peppermint oil can help to relax sphincter of Oddy , which is often impared in the case of bile reflux to stomach.
Both of these are also helpfull against bad bacteria.
So i think that there was logic in you doctor's advice. If you do have bile reflux you can try it, maybe it can be helpfull for you.
