Back Pain After Upper Endoscopy

I had an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy yesterday morning. I had been having severe abdominal pain and constipation issues. Colonoscopy was normal; I have severe IBS-C. I've GERD for a long time and was diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis in 2009. My GI doctor took 5 biopsies in my duodenum to check for occult celiac disease. He also took 2 biopsies above my gastroesophageal junction and 2 from my mid-esophagus. Yesterday I wasn't able to eat anything, because whenever I tried to eat, my chest would get tight when the food was going down. Also, my back started hurting...it's very annoying and feels like someone is pinching inside. The back pain is on my left and is mostly mid-back, but some upper back pain too. I don't have a fever and I haven't coughed up blood. Has anyone else had this type of pain after EGD? Thank you.

So sorry you are having this pain. I have always felt OK after these scopes. Did the doc go over the results while you were there, or do you have an appointment to see him?

I'd call and ask for an appointment to discuss this pain if it hasn't gone away by now.

I doubt if the pain has anything to do with biopsies, but when they do colonoscopies they have someone push on your gut to get the scope around corners. If you're out you don't know what happened.

The type of anesthesia can affect you too. I know I don't tolerate anything but Propofol. Even with that I insist on something for nausea.

When they take biopsies they just grab a chunk of flesh with a crocodile clip so its like creating ulcers if they grab a big part. You had a lot taken so I'd guess this is why its all sore. I would call your Dr though as I don't think it's normal to be in so much pain afterwards, mine did sting for a couple of weeks after though

Also during colonoscopy they can pump in gas to expand your intestines and allow the camera to move through, you might be having pain from some gas still in there,I don't have sensitive bowels but even I was yelling at the from the pain when they would pump in the gas, they had to give me a double whack of sedation and I still wasn't properly sedated, felt the whole thing

Thank you for your response! The immediate results showed a lower esophageal ring and rings and furrowing in my esophagus. I'm guessing I still have eosinophilic esophagitis, but I don't have the biopsy results back yet. I got Versed and Fentanyl, as they don't use Propofol in my facility. I've never had reactions from those drugs though. I did speak with a nurse from my GI clinic and she said that some people will develop the symptoms I've described after biopsies. Apparently, it's not common, but it's more likely to happen in people who are hyper-aware of their bodies. My GI doctor told me there's less than a zero percent chance of having a serious complication, such as a perforation, due to EGD. I was just worried because I didn't feel this way after my last EGD years ago, but I guess it just happened this time.

Thank you for your comments! I did speak with a nurse from my GI clinic and apparently some people can develop the symptoms I've listed after EGD biopsies. It usually happens when people are hyper-aware of their bodies, which I suppose I am. Also, I have severe IBS-C and GERD, so I guess it was normal that I experienced more pain. However, I would have thought that people here on the GERD forum would have experienced something similar; so, that did worry me a little. My GI doctor said that there's less than a zero percent chance of having a complication from EGD (such as developing a perforation).

I know it has been awhile since your last post. I hope and believe that by now you are feeling better. Did it take time to heal? Did you have to take something. Did you find out what caused that? As surprising it sounds that happened exactly to me as well. I can feel all the areas where the biopsies were removed and I think I am also one of the unfortunates that this happened to.
