I had my first Nissen and hiatal hernia repair in September 2013. It failed within 4 months. We don't know why. It could be because of other major health issues I have. The wrap itself tore a 2nd hole in my diaphragm, which then mimicked a new hiatal hernia.
I had an extensive repair in August, including rebuilding the diaphragm with mesh, while keeping tissue along side the esophagus to prevent erosion. There was so much scar tissue that it took the surgeon almost 5 hours to complete the surgery. Part of my stomach had to be removed during the operation, due to excessive scar tissue which had attached it to my liver. So, I ended up with a reverse toupet fundoplication.
Recovery is not quite as easy as the first surgery, but it's going well. My lungs have been better than they have been in years! I aspirated bile, so lungs were a mess.
I'll be around, as I've now joined the Lupus forum. I'll help when I can.
