Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with gerd a couple years ago. My doc prescribed omeprazole and I took it for about a year and It really helped however I started having stomach pain and I also heard that long term use can be bad for you. So I stopped taking them in May. The rebound reflux was insane. It's gotten better but my gerd has is worse than when before I started the omeprazole. Should I start taking the med again? Are there any other meds that people have had luck with?
Thanks
I am not a fan of PPI drugs, especially for long term use, unless absolutely necessary. Do you know what exactly is causing your GERD?
When I stopped my PPI cold turkey a long time ago, I had rebound reflux so bad I went to the ER. They gave me GI cocktail which helped a lot.
If your GERD is worse now, my next question to you is, what types of foods are you eating? Also what kind of drinks are you drinking? If you are not keeping a food journal I would highly recommend it because you need to identify what your trigger foods are as they are different for everybody.
When I have really bad boughts of GERD I'll take a few tablespoons of Mylanta. Sometimes I'll take a teaspoon of baking soda and mix it with water. Sometimes some potato soup (no dairy) calms it down too. And sometimes a couple slices of peeled apples helps.
I took some Zantac a couple of months ago because I was having a really bad episode. And I felt okay for about
12 hours. But when the Zantac wore off the rebound reflux was almost unbearable. Thank goodness for baking soda and water (though that should only be done sparingly).
I now control my GERD completely through an all-natural diet. I no longer have to resort to using Mylanta or baking soda.
