I am 3-1/2 weeks post lap hiatal hernia/fundoplication surgery. The first few days I said over and over "what on earth have I done, what on earth have I done" and had a dozen thoughts going through my head that I was dreaming this nightmare. Could only drink a sip or two (not water -- too thin -- but juice and Ensure), a spoon or so of jello/pudding, and a tiny bit of chicken broth. However! At about 2 weeks, the sun shone, the seas parted and life began again..... Still small meals, am drinking lots of fluids, and chewing a lot, but I can sure see light at the end of the tunnel. No more sitting up sleeping. No more choking (once so bad I couldn't breathe while I was driving down the highway -- that was the catalyst to see a Dr.). No more reflux. No more hoarse speech that made others think I had a cold.
So. Here we are at 3+ weeks. Still have a puny energy level. Helps to start the day drinking an Ensure -- calories + moisture + nutrients. Started mashed potatoes and mashed cooked carrots, and a couple of meatballs with marinara sauce. Of course they all get cut or blended very tiny, and I chew them very well. Liquid of some sort is the key. Sour cream, gravy, a little extra milk or cream while mixing, etc. I am not ready for prime time public dining but this meal tastes like 5 stars to me at this point!. All last week I would get the hiccups when I began eating. This week better.
Just want to offer encouragement -- it is a process, and it takes time. A slow process. I see my surgeon next week for the first time since surgery and just know all is well. I am so anxious to get back to normal but my system and my body keep reminding me that I am in early stages of that. This procedure requires patience and stamina. If I try to eat too fast, I feel the food has hit the wrap and I have to stop and wait....wait for the food to slowly disperse. That is not fun. If I take my time....no problem. Slow eating, small amounts, and chew chew chew.
Good luck to everyone considering this procedure, or in the early stages like me. I feel so fortunate that I have not had the complications that some of you have had.
