I need Tips for Getting Through the PH Study and Manometry

I am having both the Ph and Manometry done next week and I am starting to get nervous about it. I know the tests are uncomfortable and like most people with GERD/LPR I have anxiety. I have been trying to mentally prepare myself for the tests and to encourage myself to just breathe and that I can do it. I am not a newbie to reflux but I am to these two tests. I have avoided doing them because they are difficult. Can anyone offer me some ideas on coping with doing these tests?

The fear is actually worse than the tests. Granted they aren't pleasant but they are bearable if you try your very best to put yourself in a happy place as silly as that sounds! I focused on one spot on the wall and concentrated on my breathing and it was over and done with before I knew it. Sit still for a few minutes after the 24hr tube is in and then your body will very quickly get used to it being there. Staying as calm as you can possibly will really help you to cope and get the test done as quickly as you can.

I have to give this test a second try and I am nervous too. I think Trotters gave good advice. We also need to remember that we need to suffer through these unpleasant tests in order to end the suffering of our everyday lives from gerd/lpr. Please let us know how you made out.

Ericapeace, good advice from Trotters. I recently had both of these tests again, and my nurse was the best! He helped me relax and concentrate on breathing while gently feeding the tube in. These tests are crucial in helping with a correct diagnosis.

Unfortunately, my diagnosis is 'Jackhammer' esophagus. Finally, after 6 years of PPI's, testing, surgery, at least I know the cause of my excruciating chest pain and am being treated with medication.

Thanks all for the tips. I have had reflux issues for 11 years and had every test except these two because of fear. Interestingly I have found as I am back on my Pepcid ac from a ppi my LPR is minimal and I have heartburn. I think it is the rebound I tried to ween off but I only had a month notice. My IBS is better off the ppi so I don't think I will be going on it again. I'm very nervous for these tests because I know how important they are. I want a surgical solution and I need to be able to do these tests. I've been mentally trying to prepare. I wish there were easier tests.

Make sure they offer you numbing gel in your nose prior to these tests..it is a quick acting topical that makes the insertion of the catheter into your nose MUCH easier to tolerate. The first time my son tried to do the ph test, he was not able to tolerate the insertion, because they did not use the analgesic. We went elsewhere for the manometry, and the subsequent ph....piece of cake.Make sure ahead of time this is an option for you...our GI was willing to prescribe the gel to take with us, but it was not necessary, as they did use it at the hospital where we went the second time.
