Benzodiazepines for esophageal spasms?

My doctor now wants to prescribe Lorazepam short term and if that helps Klonopin for long term use for my diffuse esophageal spasms. Fundoplication did not stop my chest tightness/pains and I cannot take Calicum Channel Blobers (drop bp way too low), Beta Blockers (asthma), or nitrates (horrid headaches that don't stop). She says due to our limited options this is where we are. I took Baclofen that worked wonders for 4 months and then it suddenly stopped. My main worry is the horror stories of benzo's and am scared to jump on this train but also just need to feel like I can lead a normal painfree life again. My chest pains are daily and range from feeling great to slight tightness to horrible chest pain. The symptoms can change suddenly for me. Thanks for any help!

i suffer from them to. and they can be miserable. imipramine [Tofranil] helps as well as a lot of acetaminophen. not fun. this came about post surgery for me.

hey Kristin. i take it at night, helps a bit with sleep, which is nice. takes the edge of. and most importantly, i know. its not a heart issue. as you know they can be painful. good luck, if you have any info, or breakthroughs please let me know. as i will you.

had the surgery. 18 months ago. oddly enough, first symptom was shortness of breath. and my former doctor wrote it of as anxiety. breathing problem got worse. i was an extremely fit person, this was worrying me. so i went to another doctor, he ordered x ray which prompted a barium swallow, which showed 1/3 of my stomach went north. in the time it took, to figure this out, enter the dreaded chest pain. it was discovered the stomach was, preventing one lung from expanding, as well as adding pressure to the chest. after the surgery, all was good for 2 months, and chest pain came back. another ct scan should surgery was good, another barium swallow, confirmed spasms. i have been on 25 mg of Imipramine. for about 1 month. [ i half the pills] along with gas x, and some days a lot of acetaminophen, its tolerable. unfortunately, this new normal can be disappointing. so i do what i can, and try to move on. if the meds work i will take them, and if necessary taper to get of, and on to whatever it takes. sucks, just do the best i can. good luck to you as well.

My GERD advanced to Barretts Esophagus while on Nexium so, it is not the healing drug as advertised. I've been on medications for 30+ years. I am now on Protonix. I also get esophageal spasms. What works wonders for me when I get an attack is Hyosycamine 0.125 sublingual. Once it melts and it goes down my esophagus, the spasms immediately stop.
