I have been on PPI s for about 14 years (nexium, dexilant, pantoprazole ).I had a endoscopie and a colonoscopie done, also, a second endoscopie 2 years after the first one. I was told that i had acid reflux and was started on Nexium. After the second endoscopie my GI doc.put me on Dexilant. As far as i can tell I never had side effects during all those 14 years.I have been reading this forum for a few years and I guess that I was lucky compared to other people who post here. Last Dec.I decided to try to get off of the PPI s.I was on 40 mg of Pantoprazole and I stopped it and started on Nexium 20 mg for a month. No problems at all so in Jan.i stopped Nexium and went on Zantac (ranitidine 150 mg one in the morning and one at night ) .It did not help and i had to take 4-6 tums per day so I went up to 300 mg in the A.M. and 300 mg at night. This was doing the job but the side effects where bad so, i tried cimetidine 200 mg twice a day.Side effects were also bad and i switched to famitidine 40 mg A.M. and 40 mg. Pm. This did the job and after a month i cut back to 30 mg morning and 30 mg at night. Six weeks later i reduced the dose to 20 mg ,AM and PM. Once and a while i still had to take a few tums.As of now i take 20 mg morning and night for 2 days and on the third day i take 40 mg of Pantoprazole and rarely have to take a tum.I eat smaller meals,do not drink booze and have never smoked. I walk every day for 30 -45 minutes instead of biking(not good for people with acid reflux ) That s my story and posted it to help others.
