shortness of breath remains three weeks after hiatial hernia surgery

Doctors determined that I had an atypical symptom of hiatial hernia which was shortness of breath. Besides this, my only other symptom was hoarseness. After heart issues were ruled out, I had an open surgery with a 5 inch incision to repair the hiatial hernia, a partial stomach wrap, and to lengthen the esophagus. I am 3 weeks out of surgery and recovering adequately. However, I am very concerned that I am still very short of breath and still hoarse. I am hoping that this is due to lots of swelling and inflammation from the surgery. But I get concerned that I could have gone through this difficult surgery and still be left with my initial problem. I am looking for encouragement from anyone who had this surgery due to shortness of breath. Did anyone still have symptoms in the weeks after surgery and then eventually, find improvement. If so, how long before you could breath well again. I don't know anyone else who had shortness of breath and had this surgery so I will very much appreciate hearing a success story for someone in this situation. Thank you in advance.

I was wondering: did your breathing improve immediately or did this take some time for you? Also, did you have a feeling of mucous in your throat? I had this before surgery and continue to have it now.
I feel I am recovering well overall and just need to have patience with the process. Thanks for sharing information and encouragement. Happy Thanksgiving.
