Discouraged: same symptoms 6 weeks post op as before surgery

Getting discouraged. Wondering if anyone has had similar situation in recovery. Had surgery 6 weeks ago at Cleveland Clinic with very good surgeon(good surgeon, but he did not tell me much about recovery). Had hiatial hernia repair, a partial wrap and also needed lengthening of esophgagus. (Do most people need the lengthening, or is this a rare thing?
Reason for surgery was 1/2 of stomach trapped in chest. Main problem was shortness of breath; no heartburn but had constant mucous in throat and hoarseness.
In many ways, I am doing well. Energy returning, able to swallow well, incision looks good. It is still very sore when turning over in bed, but with open surgery, I guess that it to be expected.
My discouragement is because I still have the shortness of breath and hoarseness. Shortness of breath can even be just sitting down and is really bad climbing stairs. Not too bad with walking on level. My heart and lungs were ruled out as a problem before surgery, so it must have been caused by the large hernia. It feels just the same as it did before surgery and now there is the additional tight feeling in the place near top -center of breasts where vertical incision starts.
I don't mind if this goes on for months just as long as at the end of the recovery period, I would find that it was worth all I went through and that I could breath more easily. I am beginning to get very discouraged thinking that we traveled a long way for surgery, put my mom in assisted living so I could go do this and recover, and that I have gone through a lot and it starts to look like it was all for nothing. I would surely appreciate any encouragement anyone can give. I feel sort of alone because it seems not many people had the surgery because of breathing problems and not many had the open surgery. I don't know anyone who ever had this done, so on-line is my only hope of connecting with anyone who has been in this situation. Sorry for the long post. Sending good wishes to all. I am new to this; tried to reply a few minutes ago but am not sure I did it correctly -- so, here goes again. Thank you for your reply to me. It was very kind of you. I am hoping that eventually someone who has had open surgery will see my post and reply as well.
I was scanning back through posts done several years ago and accidentally stumbled upon some who had had breathing issues and a longer recovery --some who felt they had made a mistake but eventually felt improvement. One of the persons mentioned that some of their posts from years back might still be available for people to read, but I couldn't find them by scanning. Was wondering, if there is any way to access a particular person's past comments/posts. Thanks for any input you can give on this. Thanks also for your reply. I was beginning to think that my messages were disappearing into thin air (ha). I think I'll give this a little more time for healing and if no improvement, will contact my surgeon again.
