Hi,
There's a lot of stress related to a lot of chronic conditions. As someone who has had their fair share of challenges from tumors to pre-cancer, etc .. things that have helped me fight back and continue to stay well have been the following (hopefully, they help someone out there) :
1. Always consult with a physician or a specialist, whatever your challenges. Trying to self diagnose by reading things online is a sure fire way to feel greater stress and keep you away from a medical treatment sooner. Of course, health insurance and accessibility can be real issues - still, find a way to get a professional opinion.
2. We've seen at the NIH and pretty much feedback from the medical profession that common sense methods to living help a LOT. These include eating right, working out or staying active at the very least and reducing stress. Again, you might need a nutritionist or a dietician, a trainer and some way of identifying your triggers for stress. Mindful living works wonders.
3. If you're someone who was always active and athletic, it is far easier to reconnect with working out and being active. If you're not, you still ALWAYS, ALWAYS benefit from physical activity. The NIH has several useful resources available for the public. It's a shame not to use them.
4. Give yourself time to heal. Your problems took several days, weeks, months and years to manifest. Give your body time to rest, heal and relax following therapies, treatments, surgeries, etc. Most positive and beneficial changes take time.
5. Finding relaxation techniques is very helpful for overall physiological health. See what works for you - deep breathing, meditation, prayer, beginner's tai-chi, yoga, pilates, walking, swimming, music, dancing, painting, adult coloring books, cooking, gardening, community and volunteer activities and several more - there are a lot of choices. It all counts towards being psychologically and emotionally healthy. Don't trash it till you've tried it.
6. Reconnect with your doctor when needed. Also, discuss alternative therapies - several doctors are so open to these now and strongly recommend and advocate for overall healthful and mindful living. Whether it's a herbal tea or supplement or dietary changes, just discuss them with your physician if you're unsure.
