Inability to vomit after fundiplication

I have a Nissen Fundiplication in Dec of 2011. I have been unable to vomit and wonder if this is the norm. I have a stomach virus and I am so uncomfortable because I need to throw up and all I can do is gag. I hate this feeling. Does anyone else have this side effect?

yes. make sure, you always have anti nausea meds on hand. seldom needed, but when you do. good luck

I had my Nissen Fundoplication on April 1, 2011.. I have had the flu twice and I cannot throw up. My doctor told me I probably wouldn't be able to.. Uncomfortable is the word! But I got through it and I am so happy I had the surgery!! It was worth it!!

Thank you for sharing your experiences with me. I’m feeling better today, but I wish I had anti naumeds on hand. Next time I see my doc I will request them. And I have never regretted having the surgery. Stay healthy!🌞🌵

Contact your surgeon, he can call you in a prescription for Zofran which definitely helps with the nausea. They are something that I'm never without, even 4 years post-surgery.

I too cannot vomit. I go through the motions of it and only saliva comes up.

I got blood born pathogen from a tick... Nearly died. But I confirm I vommited like crazy after having a tif. And nissen.

sixness, I've been trying to find you. Who did your TIF. Mine was undone by Peter Janu in Chilton,WI. I know you 're from there. I wanted to know how things are going. I see that things are the same for you too. I did'nt have a nissen. Just wondering if the take down of TIF caused your vagus nerve damage. It did to me. Wondering if we could do something about this. I called the company that sells TIF and they said they never heard of anyone getting worse after TIF and that I had my issues before hand. They say you can have it redone. How is that possible with out messing up the nerves even more. You had yours a few years before me. My email is scorpiossnake@yahoo

Yup I had an episode of dry heaving today while in the shower. Just mucus came up. Hope I didn't damage the wrap

Usually with a full NF, two of the side effects are the inability to belch or vomit. With a floppy or toupet wrap, some people still have the ability to vomit. The purpose of the wrap is to prohibit stomach contents from entering the esophagus.

My surgeon has not gotten back . Prolly since I've been bugging him quite a bit. My dry heaving was in the shower, no food came out just a bit of mucus. It was more like something was stuck in my throat than anything. I heaved like 3 or 4 times. I'm not too worried since prolonged vomiting too soon after the surgery can cause damage. I'm almost at 2 and a half months and I didn't really vomit.

Plus I had a toupet and already had an endoscopy and two upper barium GI studies so I can't really ask my Canadian or US GI for another one ... Thoughts ?

I can't offer you any advice other than try taking Zofran when you start feeling nauseous. Dry heaving/vomiting should be avoided at all costs, especially so early into your recovery. Also, be careful of advancing your diet too quickly.

I vomited three times just two days after my toupee surgery last Thursday. It was scary when it happened but I’m doing just fine right now. I can also burp but it feels like a painful hiccup when I do burp. I feel so much better already as I don’t seem to have the heartburn and reflux symptoms that I dealt with prior to fundoplication surgery. I developed early esophageal adenocarcinoma from years of reflux and I am thankful it was treated before it spread.

Just another quick update. 18 months since my NF and I don't get any refux or I don't think so anyway and swallowing is the best it's been but anyone have any ideas why I may be getting mild breathlessness that comes and goes still? I did mension a few months back that in June 2017. I removed an old carpet in my bedroom and cut it up and bagged it and it's then been on and off since then but the last two months I've hardly felt it at all but two days ago it came back. Those shortness of breath sensations.

No Sharon, I haven't because it's not present all the time. I can go weeks without feeling anything then I'll have 1 or 2 days of it then it will go again usually when I stop thinking about it, It's not short of breath that stops me doing things, It's mild but I genuinely feel great to be quite honest. I think the operation as worked wonders because I can't feel reflux and my swallowing is brilliant. I actually didn't have these sensations after the operation it was only after cutting up that old carpet.

I too can't throw up. I had my wrap done 3/2010 and when I get nauseated I just grab a paper towel and go through the motions of throwing up and all I get is saliva. Once I go through the motions, it passes and then I get massive diarrhea (sorry for being blunt).
I don't get it all of the time so I'm going with I get a little stomach bug.
The only thing that this surgery has left me with is as I was just diagnosed with Iron deficiency anemia & Normocytic normochromic anemia. This happens sometimes to some of us who have had this surgery or any gastric surgery as the body absorbs the iron and doesn't make anymore. I am going for my second iron infusion on Thurs. as my Ferritin was 3 which is dangerous per the Dr.
Today is the first day I feel a little normal so I'm guessing the infusion is starting to work.
With the nausea I would make sure I have meds on hand like the others stated. I had this 3 weeks after my surgery and I worried that I caused the wrap to come undone but it didn't.
Wish you well as it's a long first year but you will get through it with the wonderful group here.
