Hi all,
I've recently starting posting here about my digestive woes and struggle with esophagitis. My doctor has ordered manometry testing and a PH study for my swallowing problems (eating only pureed foods currently and getting very skinny!). What can I expect from these tests? I can't get in until late next month (ugh!) but am curious what it entails.

Manometry is where they put a numbing gel in your nose and insert thin, flexible tubing through your nose and down your throat to measure your swallowing function. There are two types of pH studies, One is putting a tube into your esophagus that measures your pH level for 24 hours.and information is transmitted into a monitor that you wear on your belt. I had the Bravo 24-Hour pH test that consisted of having a small sensor attached to the back of my esophagus that again transmits information to a monitor that you wear on your belt. The sensor falls off a few days later.

I've had both tests. (The sensor through the nose into the stomach for 24 hours, not the Bravo.) They are a bit uncomfortable but nothing crazy. Worst part is passing the gag reflex as the doctor runs the sensor down and back up the next day. I've had several trans-nasal esophagoscopies so knew what to expect.

After the device is placed, it was annoying swallowing/eating but I got used to it. Again, you'll get through it and it's no biggie. Best part is that after you complete the tests, you'll get a very clear picture of what is going on related to LES strength and reflux pattern. No more guessing.

Thanks for the information and also for your support, GG and Sharon. I did have the transnasal procedure with the ENT (I was out for the endoscopy) but I think I can handle this. It sounds a bit unpleasant, but nearly everything is unpleasant these days (Lol!). I wonder if the PH study can detect LPR? I should ask about this.
