Hi all
Thanks for all the great info provided in this forum- I've found it very useful. I just had a laporoscopic Nissan fundoplication and hiatal hernia repair 3 days ago. I had a lot of pain in upper chest area for first day or so especially when breathing in but that has faded. Still feeling v tired and swallowing/burping are v painful. I'd love to get views on a couple of questions:
1. The pain when I swallow feels quite similar to the pain of heartburn - did others find that too? I think/hope its a different cause- I.e. swelling at goj rather than reflux that will reduce with time but have slight worry that the reflux has not been fixed.
2. How long after the surgery did people return to desk-based work? I have booked a week off for now. I know recovery time is variable but would just like to get an idea of the range.

Welcome to the Healing Well Forums. Since you are only 3 days post surgery, it's possible to have a whole lot of different symptoms. The pain in the upper chest/shoulder is usually trapped gas, and it subsides with walking. It is possible to still experience what feels like heartburn, but it may not be heartburn. If it is heartburn, there are members that had to temporarily stay on PPIs before completely going off of them. As far as time off, it does vary. I was actually off three months from work, I had issues with exhaustion. If your surgeon thinks you will be OK with one week off from work, I'm sure you'll be fine. I didn't start to feel better until around 6 months post-surgery, and I felt like the new me around 1 year.

Thanks for this reply Sharon smile That is interesting that some people have to stay on PPIs for a bit before coming off. I was wondering why that might be - is there some reason why the reflux might continue for a while after the surgery but then resolve? I have had symptoms again today that really feel like heartburn and it is making me worried that it might not be fixed or that somehow i have damaged the wrap by eating something that was not soft enough (is this even possible?). I am conscious that it is only 10 days since my surgery though so am fully expecting it will take longer to recover but the heartburn-like symptoms make me worried.

Just replying to my own post! I was thinking more about why for some people it make take some time after surgery for reflux symptoms to resolve and I was thinking that one reason could just be the rebound from the ppis. I took ppis until the day after the surgery and in my experience I have had pretty bad rebound heartburn about a week after stopping them so that could make sense... Anyway, no heartburn today so that is good. Just feeling exhausted and a bit nauseous still. Not at all excited to restart work tomorrow but at least there is only a week until Christmas holidays.

How are you tracking snowflake? Seems like we are at a similar stage..
I’m 2 weeks post op today and am still getting the occasional heartburn sensation - sometimes after eating and sometimes when I haven’t.. not quite sure what it is, besides my surgeon advising that it’s very unlikely to be heartburn and doesn’t think I need ppi’s
