I was diagnosed with small hiatel hernia (3 cm) in July 2017 and it's been 3.5 since. Initially I used to take PPIs everyday as my doctor prescribed it to me but later on I experimented with it and started taking it on alternate days and further increased the gap gradually and there was a point when I used to have it once every 3 weeks. But again the need for it increased and frequency went on to 1 per week. I had no side effects till December 2019 after which I started feeling indigestion a lot. I feel severe bloating which usually starts during the second half of the day and increases in the night and in morning my stomach is just like balloon. I have to pass a lot of gas in the morning inorder to feel relieved. Sometimes during the second half of the day I would feel a slight pain in my stomach due to heavy bloating. I seldom feel heaviness in chest but bad breath is a regular thing.
I want to know if anyone with HH has this problem of severe bloating and if it has improved with Nissen operation. Severe bloating keeps me uncomfortable regularly and is also a matter of public humiliation.
If anyone went through this and got relief post op. please share your experience and suggest if I should opt for surgery in this case.
P.S. I am from India and haven't met any doctor with that high an intellect regarding this condition. Please help. 🙏

Hi Sankush:
I didn't experience bloating from my hiatal hernia, but it is possible. We are not medical professionals on the Forum, but your hernia is considered to be small, and bloating could be related to a number of medical conditions. I can't help much other than to tell you that the Nissen should be a last resort, as it's recovery can be lengthy and somewhat difficult. The surgery itself usually causes bloating as a side effect post-surgery. Try and limit gas producing foods, as you might be surprised at what food do cause excess gas. Seek out a gastro doctor, if possible.

Thank you Sharon for your valuable feedback.
Yes I know people in forum are not medical professionals but sometimes medical professionals even fails to provide the solution to some problems but people who have experienced the problem can give some valuable suggestions from their own experiences.
I know Nissen is the last resort but since my symptoms apart from bloating are pretty much manageable I am delaying it for the time being. Bloating is something that's bothering me alot.
BTW have you undergone Nissen and how are you managing your symptoms?

I actually had my Nissen 5 years ago, at age 53. I had suffered from GERD for most of my adult life. The GERD actually caused asthma issues. I don't have any lingering side effects other than occasional bouts of nausea, which is a common side effect, and I take Zofran for it. Everyone's recovery is unique, but I didn't really start to feel better until 6 months post surgery and my "new" me after a year. I was off work for 3 months.
