Please help, my son has a hard time eating

Hello, I need someone's advice or to find out if someone has had the same problem. about 3 months ago my son started having air come up while he is eating. He has lost about 20 pounds and can barely eat. It takes him forever to eat small meals because air is coming up as he is swallowing. We have been to the gastroenterologist who did an upper endoscopy and diagnosed him with gerd. He had him take prilosec. 4 weeks and nothing. So he switched him to Nexium, still no help. Our naturopath did a lot of blood work and found out he has hashimotos which is an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid. So he is now on medication but still the gerd abs burping remains. We had him tested for h.pylori and it was negative. I'm at a loss and am very worried about him. Anyone else have similar issues? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much

I have not experienced the issues that your son is going through. I don't have anything to add other than you can try starting him on a GERD-friendly diet, and see if he gets any relief. This might sound really stupid, but do you think he could be swallowing a lot of air without realizing it? My suggestion would be to go to a teaching hospital, if you have one near you, for a 2nd opinion.

Thank you so much Sharon for your input. He has been on a gluten free, egg free, dairy free diet for a while. You know, it's possible he is swallowing air. At this time, any thoughts are helpful. A teaching hospital is a good suggestion. Thank you so much.

I've got hashimoto's too which I found out after having hypothyroidism. I don't quite have the problem that your son has, though I've been on a gluten free/egg free/dairy free diet for years in the past and it hasn't helped with the acid I get that much. The only time I've ever found I've had issues controlling air when I was eating was ever since a book fell on my nose over a year ago and sometimes I've had to open my mouth while eating to get enough air in. Also if he does have difficulty breathing, perhaps looking into a pulmonologist could be helpful as they know a lot about breathing. I hope something works for you.

Thank you so much for that information. Yeah we haven't noticed much change with the diet either. I will definitely look into the pulmonologist. That's a great idea. thank you for sharing that. Best of luck to you.

Has your son been tested for Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE). It is a different type of allergic reaction to certain foods. First line therapy involves a six food elimination diet. I was diagnosed as an adult after years of my reflux not getting better. Started not being able to swallow well and had a food impaction. Unfortunately, definitive diagnosis requires an endoscopy with biopsies. You might want to discuss the possibility of EoE with your gastroenterologist.
