Dry heaving 3 days after Toupet funduplication

Hi dear forum members!

I had a Toupet funduplication 6 weeks ago. Three days after the surgery I had nausia and dry heaving. I had 3 or 4 strong spasm but couldn't vomit. I felt like something blocked the content of my stomach from getting out. For some reason I was not prescribed anti nausia meds after hospital discharge.
6 weeks after the surgery I still have a burning sensation in my chest. Now I am worried that I could have broken my wrap by dry heaving too early in the recovery phase.
How likely 3 - 4 spasm of dry heaving could have damaged my wrap? Are there any forum members who had dry heaving early in the recovery, but the wrap was still intact?

Your surgeon should have told you that most people lose the ability to vomit after a fundoplication. They also should have prescribed anti-nausea medication for you to always have on hand. Please call your surgeon and get the anti-nausea medication - Zofran works well for me. You can also ask about the continued burning sensation. Some people do stay on PPIs for a short period after surgery. It's highly unlikely that you have compromised the integrity of the wrap, but you can also express your concerns to the surgeon.

I called my surgeon right away after this dry heaving episode. The surgeon was not concerned. She told me that if I continue to have nausia, call her again and she will prescribe anti nausia meds. I asked her about why I wasn't prescribed the anti nausia meds after the hospital discharge. And she told me that no one does this and she never prescribes anti nausia meds after the hospital discharge. She told me to call her if I have nausia, because she wants to know about it and then she will prescribe the meds.
I read this forum and it looks like her strategy with anti nausia meds is really strange.

The answer would be to call back and tell her you want the medication. I still have ocassional waves of nausea that come out of nowhere even 8 years after surgery. Most people do experience occasional nausea long after surgery. Did she mention anything about your inability to vomit?

She told me that I will be able to vomit in the future when inflammation comes down and the wrap loosens a bit, because I had a partial 270 degrees wrap: Toupet funduplication. She told me that with Toupet funduplication patients usually are able to vomit after everything heals.

Also I am still on PPIs after the surgery. I was planning to stop them gradually, but this burning sensation in my chest bothers me so I continue taking PPI waiting for the burning sensation to disappear.

Unfortunately, you probably don't want the wrap loosen and usually with both the Nissen and Toupet surgeries you do lose the ability to vomit. You should speak to your doctor about weaning off the PPIs. They are something that you don't want to quit cold turkey. I would be concerned about a doctor that is reluctant to prescribe anti-nausea meds when you are clearly suffering from nausea.

Is there a way to check if my wrap is still intact after the vomiting episode?
I have not asked my surgeon for any tests, but maybe I should insist on some testing to calm down.

Honestly, your wrap is pretty sturdy. It's way too early in your recovery to have another endoscopy, and I wouldn't suggest it. There's always a chance your insurance carrier would find it unnecessary and not approve it. If you have any type of health anxiety, it can cause/make your symptoms seem worse. My suggestion would be to take an over the counter Pepcid before bedtime. There's also a chance that you have advanced your diet too quickly. Sometimes if you got back to a soft/sloppy diet for a week or two it really makes a difference.
