4 week post niessen hiatal hernia repair , pain in the epigastric and dysphagia

I am having severe dysphagia and now also pain in the epigastric area . It doesn't feel like acid reflux pain.
I had barium swallow and it is clear that the liquid flow narrowed down once it got to the GE junction area where the Niessen wrap is . This could be due to swelling or the wrap or even the crura closure are too tight. I want to do EGD but the surgeon so far declined to do this . I can not live like this too long. Lost a lot of weigh and felt very weak and in pain . No improvement at all in 4 weeks but worsening symptom now is PAIN . I know EGD carries risk but perfomed well , it can be useful .

You are in very early stage of your recovery. I couldn't consume solids till 6 weeks. I started feeling better at around 3 months time.

Epigastric pain would be most likely due to post nissen gas bloat. Anti spasmodic might help so talk to your doctor.

It's way too early for EGD. It takes months and months to fully recover from this surgery. Mine took a year! Of course, I had my stomach stuck partly in my chest. Listen to your doctor! You should be on liquids or maybe just starting very soft food. As long as you are not having reflux you're doing well. Pain is to be expected. This surgery is a big deal! I'm many years out now and have not had reflux and can eat everything. I still can't vomit, so i have to be careful and keep Zofran on hand, but I can burp and feel great!

I agree with Alcie - this is a major surgery and it takes some time for the body to adjust. Advancing the diet too quickly is not a good idea and you should be on liquids or soft mushy foods. The purpose of the surgery is to tighten the junction, and like Alcie I can't vomit. It's also very common the lose weight initially. Most people gain that weight back, and then some. You may want to take some anti-gas medication containing simethicone,
