Normally I am on the UC and the Fibromyalgia forum, but this concerns my husband. In the last year he has had 2 heart attacks and a hernia. He recovered from the heart attacks but began having strange symptoms, ending up in the ER 6 times. Each time they said it is not his heart and wanted to give him PPI's. Possibly Gerd was causing the slight pressure in his chest.
Here are the symptoms: slight pressure in his chest, has chills then starts shaking. Stomach/belly feels bad but no real pain. Gets overwhelming fatigue that is ongoing.
He is scared of the PPI's and wouldn't take them. He feels better after he eats and has been eating lightly. He has taken Tums and peppermint lifesavers and feels somewhat better. He has tried Pepcid Complete (H2 inhibitor) twice. Felt better the first time, second time--NO. The symptoms occur and he is bad from a day or 2 up to a week--then the symptoms just stop. The symptoms are gone for a couple of days to a week-- then it starts up again.
He has NO heartburn or pain. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms with GERD? The doctor has not come up with any answers. We aren't even sure it is stomach related but we know it is not his heart. One Dr suggested the symptoms might abate after his hernia surgery but they won't do the surgery until after May!

If he got the heart attack, he must be on blood thinners and the one who takes blood thinners must take PPIs otherwise it will damage the stomach. Trust me, he should never leave PPI since PPIs save the stomach from side effects of blood thinners. Better to take an appointment with GI doc and discuss the situation.
I didn't have any cardiac issues but ended up in ER numerous times thinking I am having an attack. And the fatigue is always ongoing with GERD especially brain fog. With GERD attacks comes anxiety all the time and anxiety aggravates GERD symptoms.
You might also want to check the food intake, since there might be some trigger foods which are causing symptoms for some days. For me dairy was a killer along with tea, coffee, sweets plus some other.

Before having hiatal hernia surgery I kept on taking PPIs, H2 blockers and prokinetic agent regularly for about 2 years since without these I was miserable. And finally surgery saved me.

yo-yo is your husband on a blood thinner?

My husband has been on Warfarin for over 20 years due to blood clots. I have to disagree with fa83 saying blood thinners damage the stomach & people must take a PPI. Several of our friends are on warfarin too & never had stomach issues.

My suggestion would be to keep a food diary to see if you can pinpoint any potential food sensitivities that may be causing his symptoms.

May be I am wrong straydog, but I was told by a doctor who explains blood thinners may impact gastric vessels over the years and PPIs may help. Anyways, it's best to consult doctor for any medication since each patient is different.
