Hi All,
As mentioned above, I'm a regular over on the Crohn's board, but I wanted to pay you all a visit in hopes that you might comment on my GERD situation, as outlined below.
I am loaded with meds for GERD and still having persistent symptoms. As with all of my symptoms (of Crohn's, IBS, and GERD), (bloating, gas, incomplete evacuation, cramping, nausea, bad taste in mouth, sour stomach, burning/pain in throat, regurgitation feeling in throat, lumpy feeling in throat, burning in chest), my GI thinks the GERD symptoms are an overreaction on the part of my nerves and muscles, so I may end up trying a drug like Neurontin to treat it neuropathically.
But I'm curious how many of you have similar experiences with GERD. To be more specific: I started with one 40mg capsule of Nexium for about a month and a half, and it pretty much quieted the GERD symptoms. Then I tried to stop it, and that was a bad idea, symptoms came back just as badly. Then I tried to double the dose (twice daily instead of once) for a short period of time and return to one capsule, but that was ineffective. SO, since the end of January I have been taking: twice a day, 2 40mg Nexium, once a day 150mg Zantac, occasionally taking the Zantac twice, too. STILL having really problematic symptoms, (the sour stomach is most bothersome and persistent). I saw my doc yesterday and since I'm pretty maxed out on GERD drugs, he's convinced there ain't no acid left in me, and the symptoms are thus the overreaction of nerves and muscles I mentioned above. He suggested I might try Mylanta twice daily on top of the other meds to see if that helped.
I'm pretty shocked at how strong these symptoms are----to be able to break through all of those drugs??? Another GI I spoke to briefly suggested getting a ph test, but my GI said it was unnecessary, that we already know I have GERD. . . but I don't know, this all seems a little weird.
Any advice you could offer would be so appreciated. Thanks!
