Two and a half weeks ago, my husband was experiencing GERD symptoms (ball in chest, tightness in lower abdomen, burning in throat). He took Pepcid before bed, and experienced insomnia, restlessness, and a racing heart all night long. He didn’t get a wink of sleep.
The next day the doctor put him on Aciphex. While the GERD symptoms quickly subsided, he continued to experience insomnia and a racing heart. The doctor switched him to Protonix and added Ambien. From that point on he could sleep for 3-4 hours, but then he continued to wake up with a racing heart frequently throughout the night. Some nights were better than others.
He had a Holter monitor for 24 hours, which indicated no abnormalities except a spiking heartbeat once during the night (142 BPM). He had bloodwork done, including a CBC, which was all normal.
Next, the doctor prescribed a beta blocker (Atenolol), while keeping him on the Protonix and Ambien. The Atenolol seemed to help the racing heart somewhat, but the night waking continued.
Finally, the doctor recommended stopping the Protonix and switching to Zantac, while staying on the Atenolol and Ambien. He is still waking up with a racing heart frequently throughout the night, after sleeping for about 3 hours. Last night was particularly bad: he did not sleep at all after waking after 3 hours. It seems now that the Zantac is kicking in, things are worse instead of better.
Question: is it likely that the GERD medication, whether he is taking H2 Blockers like Pepcid and Zantac or PPI's such as Aciphex and Protonix, could be causing the wakefulness and racing heart? If so, what are alternatives for addressing the GERD? These medications seem to control the GERD but the side effects are a killer!
The doctor wants to add a medication to the mix: Effexor for anxiety. My feeling is that we should find out first if the medication is causing the insomnia, rather than assuming that the insomnia is caused by anxiety.
This has been a truly horrible two and a half weeks!
